Sumner Allen8 Whitney (John7, John6, Nathan5, David4, Benjamin3, John2, John1), son of John7 and Lydia (Allen) Whitney; born 27 Jun 1824, Westminster, MA,[1] and died 29 Aug 1861, Worcester, MA.

He married firstly, 5 Jan 1848, Worcester, MA, Sarah L. Chapin,[2] daughter of William B. and Sarah (-----) Chapin. She was born about 1828, and died 23 Feb 1848, Worcester, MA, aged 19 years.[3]

He married secondly, 25 Aug 1851, Worcester, MA, Lura Clark, daughter of Asa and Lois (Simonds) Clark. She was born 30 Jul 1826, Hubbardston, MA, and died 1 Jun 1900, Boston, MA, aged 73 years 10 months 2 days, of bronchopneumonia.[4] She married 23 Feb 1865, Worcester, MA, Samuel K. Buell, son of Joseph Case and Mary (Kellogg) Buell,[5] born 20 Jun 1822, New Marlboro, MA.

He was brought up on a farm and received an excellent common school education, taught school for awhile, then was teacher of penmanship and mathamatics in a college in Norfolk, VA, for two years. Returning to Worcester, MA, he began the manufacture of valentines, and engaged in the wholesale stationery and notion business, which he followed till the end of life. He was not in politics, and his only interest aside from his business was in the Baptist church, of which he was an officer. He resided Portsmouth, VA, and Worcester, MA.
