Sumner Allen8 Whitney (John7, John6, Nathan5, David4, Benjamin3, John2, John1), son of John7 and Lydia (Allen) Whitney; born Westminster, Massachusetts, 27 Jun 1824; married in Worcester, Massachusetts, 25 Aug 1851, Lura Clark, born 30 Jul 1826, in Hubbardston, Massachusetts.

He was brought up on a farm and received an excellent common school education, taught school for awhile, then was teacher of penmanship and mathamatics in a college in Norfolk, Virginia, for two years. Returning to Worcester, Massachusetts, he began the manufacture of valentines, and engaged in the wholesale stationery and notion business, which he followed till the end of life. He was not in politics, and his only interest aside from his business was in the Baptist church, of which he was an officer. He died 29 Aug 1861; resided Portsmouth, Virginia, and Worcester, Massachusetts.

Children of Sumner Allen8 and Lura (Clark) Whitney:

i. Sumner C.9 Whitney, born 7 Mar 1853; married Mary O. Hoyt.
ii. Freddie Allen Whitney, born 10 Jul 1859; died 20 Apr 1860.
iii. Fannie Lura Whitney, born 11 May 1857; married Oct. 1881, Charles W. Randall; resided 121 Post St., San Francisco, California.
