Family:Whitney, Thomas (1728-1766)

Lieut. Thomas⁵ Whitney (William⁴, William³, Joshua², John¹), son of William⁴ and Mary (Whitmore) Whitney, was born 27 or 28 Feb 1727/8, Killingly, CT,^[1], died 26 Jun 1767, Nobletown, NY, in his 38th year, and was buried in North Hillsdale Cemetery, Hillsdale, NY.^[2]

He married, circa 1747, Elizabeth Boardman, daughter of Joshua and Sarah (Stockwell) Boardman. She was born 10 Nov 1725, Litchfield, CT, and died 1793, Chenango, NY.

Pierce says the following:^[3]

He was probably born in Killingly, Conn., where he resided until after his marriage, when he moved to Canaan. He had a deed of land from his father, Nov. 5, 1750, in consideration of parental love, etc. As Thomas WHITNEY of Claverack in ye County of Albany and Province of New York for £50, he deeded to his honored father, William WHITNEY, of Canaan, the same land, June 18, 1761. Thomas was a farmer, and at the time of his death resided in Nobletown, Hillsdale, Columbia Co., N.Y., where he took an active part under the lead of Robert NOBLE, in a strife between the authorities of the colony of Massachusetts and those of New York, relative to the soil and jurisdiction of certain lands in the manor of Livingston. June 26, 1766, the sheriff and posse proceeded to Noble's house to arrest him and other persons named in the warrant, and when near Noble's house the two parties came in collision and "thereupon a firing by both parties instantly ensued and Cornelius Ten BROECK, one of the posse, Thos. WHITNEY, one of the rioters, were both shot and died on the spot." (See the proclamation of Sir Henry MOORE, of July 3, following in Documentary History of New York.) His widow went to Chenango, N.Y., with her son, Joshua, and died there before 1793, and was buried on the farm where they lived. Thomas was buried on his own farm at Nobletown.

Administration on the estate of Thomas Whitney, Albany, intestate, was granted to Joshua Whitney on 9 Nov 1772.^[4]

i.	Joshua6 Whitney, b. 27 Nov 1748, Canaan, CT; m. Hannah Green.
ii.	John Whitney, b. 15 May 1751, Canaan, CT.
iii.	Elizabeth Whitney, b. circa 1752, Sheffield, MA; d. 1822, Lisle, NY; m. Thomas Green. They lived at Lisle, NY.
iv.	Thomas Whitney, b. say 1754, "went to Norwalk and d. there about 1800".[5] He was probably the Thomas Whitney who with wife Abigail ----- had a daughter Abigail baptized 25 Dec 1774, Nobletown, NY, where his brothers lived.
v.	William Whitney, b. 1755, Sheffield, MA; m. Ruth Rodman.

• 1790, Chemung, Montgomery Co., NY: Martha Witney, 2 males 0-15 and 4 females. I think this may have been the widow of Thomas's son John.
