"Died, at his home in this village, on Tuesday, July 12th, Mr. Johnathan[sic] Whitney, in the 76th year of his age. Mr. Whitney was born in Seneca, Ontario county, N.Y., Nov. 3, 1816. Was united in marriage with Miss Anna J. Garrett, Oct. 8, 1839. Came to Michigan immediately after his marriage and settled in Allen township where he has lived continuously for the past fifty-three years. Mr. and Mrs. Whitney were permitted to rear a family of four children, W. G. Whitney, of this village; J. C. Whitney, of Hillsdale; Mrs. Anna Watkins and Mrs. Jennie Weir, (now deceased.) On the 8th day of July, 1879, the wife and mother passed away, to be ‘forever with the Lord.’ Oct. 5th, 1880, Mr. Whitney contracted a second marriage with Miss Ruth Hooper, of Geneva, N.Y., who is now left in her declining years to tread the pathway of life alone. The funeral services took place of the M. E. church, from which the deceased had long been a member, on Thursday, the 14th inst., and was very largely attended, Rev. G. W. Howe assisted by Rev. J. Hoyt officiating. Two brothers, Mr. William Whitney, of Ohio, and Mr. Ami Whitney, of Geneva, N.Y., and a sister Mrs. Anna Wilson, also of Geneva, besides many other relatives from surrounding towns came in response to the messages sent out, to sympathize with the stricken family and to pay the [?]…Mrs. Ruth Whitney and the family desire to offer their sincere thanks to all who rendered kindly assistance during the sad and trying hours that came to them in the death of husband, father, grandfather and brother."
