Clean-up Thanks

Hi Robert,

Thank you for doing me the kindness of cleaning up my home page here. Your time and expertise are much appreciated!

Kind regards,

Ross

Daniel Whitney

Robert, I’m not sure I ever thanked you for looking into Daniel, but thank you! (Your post of april 2, 2011) As the busy summer comes to a close, I’ve started my Whitney research again and have spent some time exploring the website and have been trying to understand some of the tools available. The site isn’t the easiest to understand and navigate, but I’m learning. The census extracts in the archives with links to known Whitney family pages have been very useful. My apologies for this being so long, but…

I looked into the unknown Whitney’s in the area in the 1800 census as well as 1810 and 1820. I really wasn’t getting anywhere as most seemed to have moved on to other locations with the exception of Job Whitney (1810 & 1820) In the 1810 census, Job wasn’t linked to a family page, but he was in 1820. In reviewing Job’s family page, two things struck me. First, it indicated that he was not found in the 1810 census. I guess whoever created the page just missed him. (I’ll do a side by side comparison of the 2 records and try to learn how to correct his family page if they match.) Secondly, there is a fifth child (male) listed born 1790-1800 in Guilford, VT as determined from the 1800 census, but his name is unknown. I thought this son may be Daniel, but it didn’t sync with the place of birth (Deerfield) that my grand aunt he listed while researching the family in the 70’s. (sources she cited were a family bible and perhaps a DAR record) Secondly, Daniel always list New York as his place of birth in the later census records.

I also found this extract in Hamilton Child's "Gazetteer of Jefferson County, N.Y.", published in 1890. “The latter married Frances H., daughter of Daniel and Arvilla (Marsh) Whitney, of Dexter N.Y., and their children are Marian E., Clara, Brayton W., and Maude. Daniel Whitney, mentioned above, was a native of Oneida County, whence he removed to the town of Hounsfield. When 18 years of age he served in the War of 1812 in the battle of Sackets Harbor. He married Arvilla Marsh of Oneida County by whom he had children as follows: Clark M., Calvin, Daniel, Alva A., Brayton, Sarah M., Clarissa M., Frances H., Julia P., Jane A., and Mary A.” This is further evidence that Daniel was from Oneida County.

My next course of action was to review the know Whitney family pages that had males of Daniel’s age. They all checked out with the exception of Whitney, Samuel (1749-1822). In reviewing the 1800 and 1810 census records, there appears to be a male of Daniel’s age, but not in the list of Samuel’s children. I then tried to understand why the 1800 census extract listed Samuel’s residence as Paris while Ancestry.com listed it as Deerfield. I went back and looked at the films of the original census records in Ancestry and found Deerfield and Paris records mixed together. Two pages prior to Samuel’s listing (page 198), the header reads Paris. Further down on the page written vertically and lightly, it says Deerfield. On the right hand side of the page, the heading says Deerfield and further down on the page written vertically and lightly, it says Paris. On page 199 where Samuel is listed, the header reads Paris, but further down on the page beyond Samuel, written vertically and lightly, it says Deerfield. I don’t know which is correct, but I can see how perhaps my grand aunt and Ancestry got confused.

Once again, my apologies for the long story, but my theory is that Daniel is the 11th child and 6th son of Samuel (1749-1822).

What do you think?

Brad

P.S. I will create a family page this week for Daniel.

Daniel Whitney

Robert,

Thank you for the quick response. So much for that theory and an easy link. I will take your suggestions and follow-up to see it I can find a probate record for Samuel as well as contacting a local historian and the pension record. I wasn’t sure how accurate all the info was in the referenced book. I’ve researched my Mom’s side of the family (Kelsey) using a 3 volume set about the descendants of William Kelsey of Cambridge in 1632. Some lines in the book aren’t complete as they must not have received input from all of the descendants or couldn’t find some. But then again, that research was started much later than S. Whitney Phoenix’s book.

I also intend to look more closely at the unknown Whitney’s from the census reports. They may be hidden there with a misspelled last name. I have found that to be the case many times with the Whitney family I have identified as well as my other family lines.

Once again, thank you!

Brad

Daniel Whitney

Robert,

I have another favor to ask; I just made my first attempt at creating a family page for Daniel Whitney. I've been reading the help pages on format, links and so forth in an attempt to do it correctly. Before I get too far down the road and have to fix a bunch of stuff, would you mind taking a look at it and let me know if I'm doing it correctly?

Thank you!

Brad

Daniel Whitney Page

Thank you very much Robert for reviewing and making the changes. I appreciate you adding the categories as well. I'll be sure to incorporate these types of changes into future pages. I hope it's ok, but I also added a link to Daniel's page in the Whitneys by Given Name section as well.

Now I understand what the # anchor is all about. I hadn't found anything in the Help section.

I assume when I'm done adding info on Daniel's page, that I develop pages for his children that married and had children? Since I haven't linked Daniel to any of the early Whitney families, I assume I don't mess with the generational lineage string? i.e. (Daniel1)

Daniel Whitney Update

Robert,

Just a BRIEF update this time.

  • I’ve sent out inquires to 8 historians in the area where Daniel was supposedly born and where he lived.
  • I did not find a War of 1812 pension application for Daniel. As a matter of fact, I could not locate a service record at all in either Ancestry or WorldVitalRecords. I found publications that indicated he fought in The Battle of Sackets Harbor, but no record. In one of your earlier messages, it sounded like you had found one?
  • I’m waiting to hear back from Whitney Keen about the process for DNA testing.
  • I’ve submitted a photo request for the DAR record (Bible 49:223) that my grand aunt cited as the source for birth records for Daniel, Arvilla and family.

Daniel’s Family Page has been updated with census records and I cleaned up the children’s records in preparation for developing their own pages. For some reason, when I copy the census data for 1850 & beyond, I get an extra line after Daniel. How do I correct & prevent this from occurring?

New Pages

Robert,

Would you mind adding 2 new names to the Whitneys by Given Name page? I think that task is a bit beyond my knowledge set. The names are Aliza Augustina & Brayton, both children of Daniel.

Thank you!

Brad
