I just wanted to say how impressed I am at all of the edits you have been making! New family pages, linking them together, adding DNA results - Excellent! If you have any questions on how to do something, just let me know.

A few details

Hi Tara:

Looks like you're making great progress on your pages. I see that you are trying to add a few "extras" that Robert and I typically have been adding to pages. This is a great help! A few pointers: The Category links go at the very very bottom, after the copyright, and ALL locations listed on a page should be entered - state; county, state; and town, county, state. I'm currently working on another side project in which I will create pages for each of these locations so the links don't turn up red.

Also, the months in the dates need to be "Jan", "Feb", etc. - that's just the convention that we have been using. I've been trying to change your months from numbers to this format, but of course it'll help if they were entered this way from the start - less chance I'll make a typo!

Thanks again for all of your help!

1830 Format

Hi Tara:

For the 1830 census extracts, I've posted the instructions that were sent to the mailing list on this page: 1830 Census Extract Instructions. This is the format that we're trying to use, rather than the grid format that has been used on a few pages. We're trying to get away from that format.

Again, thank you for all of the great edits! You're doing fantastic work!

Martha / Matilda

On Malcolm's page we state that Martha m. Mr. Red and Matilda m. Wyley Burkhalter.

If you then click on the link for Matilda, the page that comes up is titled Martha Whitney, but the husband is Burkhalter.

Is there an issue here? Should this page be named Matilda instead of Martha?

If this is a problem, just let me know - I have a quick and easy way to fix everything.

John Whitney

You may want to keep an eye on this page that I have been working on Family:Whitney, John (1750-1818).

Changing Page Names

I see you've started the page Family:Whitney, Daniel (c1800-a1870). When you get some estimated dates, you can ask for the page to be renamed. Simply add "{{rename|newname}}" at the top of the page. For example, {{rename|Family:Whitney, Daniel (c1800-a1870)}}". Then, the next time I run the WRG-Robot script, it'll rename the page and make sure that all other pages that might link to it are properly changed as well.

Hi Tara!

For the six pages that you created for the descendants of Family:Whitney, Daniel (c1800-a1870), you have many dates which appear as just years. Are you certain of these years, or do they come from ages on census records, for example? If this is the case, we should probably make these all "ca." dates as the year could be off by a year or so depending on the date the census was taken and the person's birthdate. Let me know and I can help to convert them.

Also, take a look at the current version of the pages as I've made a few formatting changes. For example, we typically start the census entries with a bullet instead of ending with a <div>.

Looks great! We're making good progress now!

Regarding the family of Family:Whitney, Hiram (c1785-1842), on the 1850 census, there is a Mary J. Whitney, age 22 residing with Wayman. Was this Hiram's much younger widow? Who was Marilda Whitney listed next? Did Hiram and Mary Jane have a daughter before Hiram died?

We have plans to do something different with the Localities page. We're wanting to add ONLY the countries to that page, and then to have the subdivisions categorized with the country so they are sub-locations. In other words, no states, cities, etc. on the Localities page directly... it became too hard to keep up. The long list on that page is there to remind me which pages I need to "fix" to the new method.

Here's how it will work:

Localities page

- includes a link to United States

Category:United States

- auto includes all pages categorized as being in United States

- added to the category United States in the typical manner.

Hi Tara:

Great information that you found on your recent trip!!!

I've made some formatting changes on a few of your pages recently to bring them in line with our guidelines. Robert and I created these guidelines for formatting the family group pages to make sure they were all consistent. Feel free to read & let me know your thoughts. Don't feel you need to get everything right - I'd rather have you working on content than style, but I wanted to know that we DID have a reason to our madness. If you ever have a question on how to format something on the pages, check here. If you don't find your answer, ask me or Robert and we'll add it to that page.

Jeremiah Whitney

In the 1830 South Carolina Census Extract, you have Jeremiah linked back to the 1820 Extract. Did you mean to link him back to a family page instead?

Template Loop

You have created at template DNA-111 which, as part of its definition, calls itself. This is not allowed, and if it were, it would send the computer into an infinite loop. The first call of DNA-111 would generate a second, which would generate a third, and so on. I'm not sure what you were trying to accomplish with it, but I'd be willing to try to help you achieve your goal.
