Welcome to the Whitney Research Group website. I did a quick search of James Whitney and Mary Jane Molloy and found them mentioned on [http://www.helensfamilytrees.com/ohag04.htm this page], where it states the following:

:William O'HARA was born about 1884. William took over the running of his parents' shop and pub after the death of his mother. He died young.

:William married Florence (Dolly) WHITNEY, daughter of James WHITNEY and Mary Jane MOLLOY. Florence was born in poss. Ballyfermoyle, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. She died about 1985 in Australia.

:Florence was widowed young. She later remarried and had children. The family subsequently emigrated to Australia which became home for all of Florence's siblings.

So it appears that your Whitneys may have come from Cootehall, County Roscommon, Ireland, perhaps on the property named Ballyfermoyle.

:Whitney - In 1857 Thomas Whitney owned several townlands in the parish of Kilmactranny. His main residence was at Merton, Enniscorthy, county Wexford. Two of his daughters, Amelia Sarah Hewitson and Alice Julia Eden, held over 3000 acres in county Sligo in 1876. '''Benjamin Whitney, a cousin of Thomas Whitney, owned 563 acres in county Roscommon''' and 272 acres in county Armagh in the 1870s. He was the Clerk of the Peace and Registrar of Titles for county Mayo and legal adviser to the Earls of Lucan. He was knighted and his legal firm still operate in Dublin as Whitney, Moore and Keller.

Note that I didn't find any definitive link between your James Whitney and this Benjamin Whitney, but because they were both in the same area of Ireland, this should be researched further.
