Charles Edward Hill Whitney (William G., Solomon, Joseph, Abel, Nathaniel, Benjamin, John), was born abt 1849, Troy, ME, and died 04 1908, Lost at sea aboard the Schooner J. H. Chaffee.
He married 10 19 1883, Bangor, ME, Elizabeth E. "Nellie" Gilpatrick. She was born abt 1859, Clifton, ME, and died 02 06 1926, Chelsea, MA.
Charles was not born into this family. He was informally adopted into the family when he was orphaned. He resumed his birth name after his service in the Civil War, in which he served as Charles E. Whitney. He was a steward aboard the Schooner J. H. Chaffee when it was lost at sea after departing on 9 April 1908 from Boston for Perth Amboy, NJ.
