Cyrus Whitney was a good farmer and business man. Started a cotton factory in his native town, which was not very successful, was interested in a gold mine in Harvard. (A hole said to be 100 feet deep is shown in side hill now) helped build Union Turnpike from Concord thrugh his farm to Harvard and Lancaster, which joined road to Fitchburg. Built a substantial square brick mansion soon after his last marriage where his wife presided with dignity, ability and grace over many a socal gathering. She had the first piano in town, the first carriage, left in her attic a loom for weaving homespun cloth and carpets, as well as flax wheels, wool spinning wheels and other evidences of her industry, skill and thrift. A well worn copy of the Scriptures and another of Baxter's Saint's Rest witness her piety, and well do her grandchildren remember her excellent cooking, her cheery tones, her loving care. Cyrus, like many another Whitneys was ingenious, making use of the blacksmith shop left by his Uncle Jonas, and a bench for wood work, for repairs of farming utensils. He had a cider mill where at first the native fruit was ground up, and later the less marketable portion of the grafted crop. His cellars had the best of bottled cider of all ages; his barns were crowded with hay for his large herd of cattle, his lands were surrounded by heavy walls, his field near his house ornamented with an artificial pond which was sell stocked with fish and lilies, surrounded by his orchards of peaches, pears, as well as apples. She made her will 14 Feb 1856; it was probated 5 Jan 1858. Sons Edwin, Isaiah, and Isaac were executors. He resided Stow and Harvard, MA. | Cyrus Whitney was a good farmer and business man. Cyrus6 Whitney (Isaiah5, Isaiah4, Isaiah3, Thomas2, John1), son of Isaiah5 and Persis (Randall) Whitney, was born 17 Aug 1771, Harvard, MA,[1] and died 24 Aug 1847, Harvard, MA, aged 76 years.[2]
He married firstly, 19 Jun 1796, Harvard, MA, Aseneth Harris,[3] daughter of Richard, Jr., and Lydia (Atherton) Harris. She was born 26 Aug 1772, Harvard, MA, and died 22 Mar 1800, Harvard, MA, aged 27 years.[4]
He married secondly, 22 Mar 1802, Mary "Polly"7 Whitney,[5] daughter of Dea. Isaac6 and Lucy (Mead) Whitney. She was born 13 Dec 1779,[6] and died 19 Nov 1857, Harvard, MA, aged 79 years, of consumption.[7]
