He was the son of Ohio Whitney and Mary (Bolton) Whitney, and was born in Ashburnham, Massachusetts. In early life he was a contractor and builder. He was engaged at many different times in many business enterprises, and especially those in which the prosperity of the town was immediately involved. But he was best known in the annals of his native town as a public-spirited, loyal citizen. In the affairs of the town he was much employed. For about 20 years he presided over the annual meetings of the town, and was frequently elected to the boards of selectmen, assessor, town treasurer, etc. He was also director and trustee in various banks and corporations, and at his death was the treasurer of the Cushing academy. But such enumeration of public service fails to suggest the characteristics of the man. In this direction others have equal honors, but few have served the public with equal acceptance and efficiency. In his intercourse with his fellow-men he was affable and charitable. In the inner walks of his inner life his affections were constant and his friendship enduring. In 1856 he represented the town in the legislature as representative, and the following year he was a member of the senate. He died 6 Feb 1879; resided Ashburnham, Massachusetts.

Hon. Ohio8 Whitney (Ohio7, Silas6, Samuel5, William4, Nathaniel3, John2, John1), son of Ohio7 and Mary (Bolton) Whitney, was born 9 Jun 1813, Ashburnham, MA,[1] and died 6 Feb 1879, Ashburnham, MA, aged 65 years 7 months 27 days, of brain disease.

He married, 11 Apr 1839, Ashburnham, MA, Mary R. Brooks.[2] She was born 1 Oct 1818,[3] and died 1904, Ashburnham.
