Daniel Greene Whitney (James, Thomas), son of James and Ruth (Greene) Whitney, was born 6 Oct 1808, Washington Co., OH, and died 7 Jan 1870, San Francisco, CA, aged 61.[1]

He married, 15 Aug 1838, New Haven, CT, Mary Ann Pomeroy (Munson) Cutler,[2] daughter of Aeneas and Mary (Shepherd) Munson. She was born 28 Mar 1803, CT, and died 7 Jul 1844. She had married firstly, 29 May 1821, George Younglove Cutler, of Watertown, CT, who d. 3 Sep 1834, aged 37 years.

He resided in Quincy, IL, and was a dealer in dry-goods. Afterward he removed to California; was an officer in the California Steamboat Co.

Children of Daniel Greene and Mary Ann Pomeroy (Munson)(Cutler) Whitney:

i. Aeneas Monson Whitney, b. ca. 1839, IL; he and his younger brother, after the death of their mother, were brought to their grandparents in New Haven, where they were under the particular charge of their uncle Charles; Aeneas M. d. from the effect of a fall from a high tree 6 Oct 1854, aged 15,--"a remarkably quick-witted and intelligent youth." Dr. Aeneas bequeathed to Georgianna Cutler and Aeneas M. Whitney $2000 in a note against D. G. W.; and also 1/3 the Teas place at Nauvoo, and also the house and the several blocks of land which I purchased of Mrs. Cutler at Nauvoo."

iii. William Munson Whitney, b. 8 Jul 1843, IL; d. 1 Sep 1884, Sacramento, CA, from rheumatism of the heart, aged about 40; he received by his grandfather's will 20 shares in the Mechanics Bank; served in the War as a member of Co. H, 27th Conn. Vols.,--enlisted a private 4 Sept. 1862, captured 3 May 1863 at Chancellorsville, VA, paroled 14 May 1863, mustered out 27 July 1863; became freight agent on a steamer running between San Francisco and Sacramento.
