He married 08 30 1935, Beverly, Essex Co., Massach, Philip Ernest Nokes, daughter of Ernest L. and Louise S. (Bradshaw) Nokes. She was born 03 17 1907, England, and died 02 18 1990, Beverly Essex Co., Massachusetts.
Obituary of Esther M. (Whitney) Nokes, 89 Beverly- Esther M. (Whitney) Nokes, 89,of Beverly, died Monday. Nov. 13, 2000 at her home. She was the wife of the late Phillip Nokes. Born in Beverly, she was the daighter of the late C. Raymond Whitney and M. Elsie (Durdan) Whitney. Mrs. Nokes was an active member of the Second Congregational Church where she was a former church financial secretary, an active member of the Smith Circle, former treasurer of the Women's Union and in charge of the church flowers for more than 10 years. She was a member of the Prudential Board where she was an auditor for two years and assistant treasurer for one year. Mrs. Nokes also served on the Pastoral Search Committee which called the former pastor, Robert Wright, to North Beverly. She is survived by two sons, Kenneth Nokes of Ipswich and David Nokes of Lexington; two daughters, Carol Jean Nokes of Beverly and Karen Varga of Georgetown; a sister, Ruth Clark of Florida; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, a sister-in-law, Dorothy Whitney of Florida; and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Charles Whitney.
From the Town Records of Beverly, MA; Marriage Records (Page 152, line 155): Phillip Ernest Nokes and Esther May Whitney were married 30 August 1935 in Beverly. Phillip was born in England, the son of Ernest L. and Louise S. (Bradshaw) Nokes. They were married by Rev. Irving H. Arnold. Phillip resided at 526 Western Ave., Lynn, MA. He was a 28 year old mechanical engineer. Esther resided at 20 Whittier St., Beverly, and was a billing clerk.
Phillip and Esther had four children, all of whom remain alive.
