John6 Whitney (John5, Abraham4, Joseph3, John2, Henry1), son of John5 and Ann (Fox) Whitney, was born 9 Nov 1806, Pudding Lane, Norwalk, CT, and died after 1880.

He married, 17 Aug 1832, Ithaca, NY, Ruth Hutchinson, daughter of Silas and Elizabeth (Buell) Hutchinson. She was born 7 Jun 1802, Genoa, NY, and died after 1880.

Phoenix says the following:

"John Whitney, b. in Pudding Lane, Norwalk, Conn., 9 Nov. 1806; a shoemaker, farmer, and chopper; left Norwalk, in 1828; lived in New Canaan, Conn., Brooklyn, N. Y., Albany, N. Y., and in Caroline, N. Y., where he was married, 17 Aug. 1832, by Rev. Alfred E. Campbell, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Ithaca, N. Y., to Ruth Hutchinson, born in Genoa, N. Y., 7 June 1802, dau. of Silas and Elizabeth (Buell) Hutchinson, of Caroline. They lived for a short time in Ithaca, Caroline, and Dryden, N. Y.; moved, 1 Nov. 1837, to Adams, Defiance Co., Ohio; thence, in Oct. 1842, to Defiance, and, in Oct. 1846, to Evansport, both in the same county. In 1874, he was living in Adams, with his son, Munson Lyman Whitney. His wife went to California with her son, George Alpheus Whitney, and thence to Albany, Linn Co., Oregon, where she was living in 1874."

i. Ann Elizabeth7 Whitney, b. 19 May 1833, Caroline, NY; d. 3 May 1834, Caroline, NY; bur. in the family cemetery, Caroline, NY.
ii. Munson Lyman Whitney, b. 24 Feb 1835, Caroline, NY; m. Ann Felton Chase.
iii. Benjamin Hobart Whitney, b. 14 Sep 1836, Dryden, NY; d. 26 Jun 1839, Adams, OH; bur. Adams Ridge Cemetery, Adams, OH.
iv. John James Whitney, b. 5 Mar 1839, Adams, OH; a lawyer; graduated at the Law School of the University of Albany, NY, 20 May 1864; began the practice of his profession in the Autumn of 1867, at Albany, OR, where he was living in July 1876, unmarried; was elected, Jun 1874, prosecuting attorney of the Third Judicial District of Oregon, including five counties.
v. William Henry Whitney, b. 26 Oct 1841, Adams, OH; enlisted, 6 June 1862, in Co. H, 87th Reg., Ohio Vol. Ind., and was discharged 5 Oct 1862; graduated in the Detroit Commercial School in 1863; went to California, thence to Oregon, and May 1874 returned to California, intending to remain, and was at San Francisco, in Jul 1876.
vi. George Alpheus Whitney, b. 16 Aug 1843, Defiance, OH; m. Edith Elizabeth Lloyd.
