Family:Whitney, Alexander (1789-1878)

Alexander⁶ Whitney (Alexander⁵, Eleazer⁴, Eleazer³, Thomas², John¹), son of Alexander⁵ and Lois (Carroll) Whitney, was born 5 Dec 1789, Henniker, NH,^[1] and died 26 Nov 1878, New London, NH.

He married, 24 Nov 1814, Henniker, NH, Lydia Foster.^[2] She was born 2 Nov 1795, and died 27 Apr 1875.

He was a farmer; was a hard working, industrious, and honest citizen and respected by all who knew him. He moved from Henniker to New London in 1826. He resided Henniker and New London, NH.

iv.	William Story Whitney, b. 1 Nov 1822, Henniker, NH;[6] m. Mary B. Durgan.
v.	George A. Whitney, b. 11 Feb 1825, Henniker, NH;[7] d. 14 Jun 1854, s.p.; m. 1 Sep 1852, Ann Eliza Jones. Was a lumberman and was killed by lightning while peeling bark. It seems likely that she was the Anna E. Whitney, daughter of Peter and Ann Eliza (-----) Jones, b. 1830, West Cambridge, MA, who m. 10 Dec 1862, Concord, NH, John McCarty Hammond.[8]

vii.	Emeline L. Whitney, b. 15 Jun 1830; d. aft. 1900; unmarried; resided Ridgeway, IA.
viii.	Livonia M. Whitney, b. 6 Feb 1833, New London, NH; m. 4 or 14 Dec 1862, Wilmont, NH, Daniel S. Piper.[9] Children: a. (daughter) Piper, b. 9 Mar 1870; d. 11 Mar 1870. b. Myra Alice Piper, b. 15 Nov 1873; res. Medford, MN.
ix.	Harriett N. Whitney, b. 8 Sep 1835, New London, NH; m. 13 Oct 1867, Sutton, NH, Erwin G. Cate.[10] Children: a. Alice Carrie Cate, b. 22 Jan 1878; res. Boscowen, NH.

xi.	Jannett M. Whitney, b. 10 Mar 1840, New London, NH; d. 28 Mar 1872; m. 9 Jul 1865, Sutton, NH, Alonzo Phelps.[11] Pierce wrongly states that she was unmarried. Child: a. Walter L. Phelps alias Whitney, b. Nov 1865, NH; in the 1870 census, he had the surname Phelps, but in 1880, he was living with his uncle Charles, with the surname Whitney. He m. 14 Jun 1894, Ridgeway, IA, Lottie Anna Martin, b. Aug 1870, IA, dau. of John and Mahala (Condrey) Martin.[12]
