James Whitney (Thomas), son of Whitney, Thomas, was born 23 Jul 1774 Somerset Co., MD, and died 13 Nov 1852, Point Harmon, OH.

He married firstly, 14 Nov 1807, Washington Co., OH, Ruth Greene, daughter of John and Mary (Greene) Greene. She was born 4 Apr 1782, Warwick, RI, and died 17 Jun 1832, Point Harmon, OH.

He married secondly, 10 Dec 1833, Washington Co., OH, Rebecca Bowen. She was born about 1789, CT, and died after 1860.

He resided Washington Co., OH.[1]

i. Daniel Greene Whitney, b. 6 Oct 1808, Washington Co., OH; m. Mary Ann Cutler.
ii. Sarah Whitney, b. 20 Jun 1810, Washington Co., OH; d. 15 Aug 1843, Cincinnati, OH; m. 21 Sep 1830, Washington Co., OH, William Herr, b. 10 Mar 1806, Hagerstown, MD, d. 1897. He was a Methodist preacher of Dayton, OH.
iii. James Whitney, b. 31 Aug 1812, Washington Co., OH; d. 26 Dec 1865, San Francisco, CA; m.(1) 10 May 1859, Louisville, KY, Amelia Hite, b. 1839, d. 24 Feb 1860, San Francisco, CA; m.(2) 9 Feb 1865, San Francisco, CA, Harriet B. Trenor, b. 1839. He devoted his life to the interior navigation of the western counrty. He was first a clerk on the Ohio River, then captain and owner of boats on the Mississippi. He went to California in 1849, resided in San Francisco where he was president of The California Steam Navigation Co. He had no children.
iv. Benjamin Ives Whitney, b. 31 Aug 1817, Washington Co., OH, d. 11 Nov 1841, Quincy, IL; he was a druggist and died unmarried.
v. William Whitney, b. 19 Nov 1820, Washington Co., OH; d. 1 Dec 1845; he was a druggist and died unmarried.

James and Rebecca (Bowen) Whitney probably had no children.
