Family:Whitney, Moses (1789-1857)
Moses6 Whitney (Jabez5, Joshua4, Joshua3, Benjamin2, John1), son of Jabez4 and Experience (Fairbanks) Whitney, was born about 23 Apr 1789, Peru, MA, and died 29 Mar 1857, Westfield, MA, aged 67 years 11 months 24 days, of lung fever, widower, farmer, born Peru, MA, son of Jabez and Experience Whitney.[1]
He married firstly, 13 Mar 1811, Hinsdale, MA, Polly Ferry.[2] She was born about 1783, Chester, MA, and died 5 or 6 Apr 1854, Westfield, MA, aged 71 years.[3]
He married secondly, 11 Aug 1854, Westfield, MA, J. C. Gowtry, of New Hartford, daughter of John Gowtry.[4] She was born about 1818.
Children of Moses6 and Polly (Ferry) Whitney, probably incomplete and order uncertain:
i. Oramel Leland7 Whitney, b. 10 Dec 1811, Hinsdale, MA;[5] m. Judith Holbrook. ii. Caroline Whitney, b. ca. 1812, Chester, MA; d. 1 Mar 1853, Westfield, MA, aged 41, of consumption.[6] iii. Moses Whitney, b. 14 Aug 1814, Hinsdale, MA.[7] No further record found. iv. William Whitney, b. ca. 1817; d. 10 Nov 1821, Hinsdale, MA, aged 4 years.[8] v. (daughter) Whitney, b. 1810-1820; deduced from 1820 census. She may been the Miriam Whitney who m. 18 Nov 1845, Westfield, MA, Sturges F. Upson.[9] The fact that Judith, the widow of Oramel, above, married Sturges F. Upson's brother Elias lends credence to this identification. They were not found in any census record, so may both have died before 1850. vi. Mary Maria Whitney, b. 2 Aug 1824, Windsor, MA.[10] No further record found.
Notes
The woman 60-69 in his family in 1830, and 70-79 in 1840, may have been his stepmother Hannah (-----)(Davis) Whitney. If so, she was probably the widow Hannah Whitney who died 10 Mar 1849, Westfield, aged 87 years.[11]
