Here is the information on Jennie S. Baker
Dear James,
Thank you for your inquiry. Sarah Jennie Baker (1845-1882) was the 9th child of John Baker (1806-1879) and his wife Ruth Pope Corbin (1806-1879). She was the 2nd of the Baker's daughters to carry the name "Sarah", an older sister, Sarah A Baker (1831-1834) died young, and as was the custom of the time, especially in Quaker families, a later child would often be named after the deceased infant. Sarah Jennie would be known as "Jennie".
Both John Baker and Ruth Pope Corbin would be born in 1806 in Vermont (your source had that much correct); John would move with his family as an infant to Smoke's Creek in the far western wilderness of what would become Eden, Niagara County (later Erie Co.) New York by 1808. Ruth's family would migrate to Eden in the late teens; John and Ruth were married in Erie Co., NY 06 Mar 1825.
John Baker would move his family to Brush Creek in Fayette Co., Iowa in 1857. His farm was only about six or so miles from Strawberry Point in Clayton County, which would be the "hub" for this area. By way of reference, Madison in Buchanan County would be about the same distance from John Baker's farm, only to the south instead of the east.
Daughters Melissa and Mary Ann (Mary Ann was my 2nd great grandmother) would both be married at their father's farm in 1859. It has always been my working assumption that Jennie also married David Whitney at her father's farm.
You can reference the following censuses for Jennie:
(1)1850 FCNY Eden, Erie County: Sarah J Baker NY/age4
(2)1860 FCIA Brush Creek, Fayette Co:" " " NY/age14
(3)1870 FCIA Madison,Buchanan Co: Jennie S Whitney NY/age24
(4)1880 FCIA Madison,Buchanan Co: " " " NY/age34
Regarding her siblings, three died in infancy. Of the remaining, four (David, Abbie, Obadiah (OE), and Melissa) would relocate west to Shasta Co., California in 1876; in the spring of 1879 John and Ruth Pope Corbin Baker would sell their farm in Fayette County and also head west to Shasta County, where they would die three days apart three months after their arrival.
Only sister Mary Ann Baker (my 2nd great grandmother), and the youngest sibling, Francis (Frank) Baker would still be in the area when Jennie died; Mary Ann and husband Alonzo S. Clark had a farm near Strawberry Point before selling it in 1880 to move into the actual town, where they would live until the autumn of 1909 when they too would travel west to California, winding up in San Diego late that year.
In my family, that generation was chronicled by Nelle Clark, who was the youngest child of Alonzo and Mary Ann Baker Clark, making her a niece of Jennie. Unfortunately, she was born some five years (+/-) after Jennie's death. But she was at home with her parents until they left for San Diego, so her data was directly from her mother on these Baker's.
As a direct descendant of this line I do have major info on all members of this Baker family; unfortunately I have entered very little of it onto my internet/Ancestry trees; most is in fact in hard copy binder form, so it may take me a bit to track down specific inquiries, but am always happy to help on specific questions.
I have yet to locate a photograph of Jennie or her husband. Might you have one?
Until next time....
Take Care,
Richard Clark
