Family:Whitney, Joseph S. (c1828-a1870)

Joseph S.⁸ Whitney (Jonathan⁷, Jonathan⁶, Caleb⁵, Jonathan⁴, Richard³, Richard², John¹), son of Jonathan⁷ and Lucy (Spaulding) Whitney, was born about 1828, Templeton or Gardner, MA, and died after 1871.

He married firstly, 6 Nov 1848, Boston, MA, Harriet (Scott) Chase,^[1] daughter of Levi and Lucy (Billings) Scott. She was born about 15 Feb 1825, Machias, ME, and died 20 Dec 1853, Boston, MA, aged 28 years 10 months 5 days, of childbirth.^[2]

He married secondly, 12 Mar 1854, Boston, MA, Hannah S. Chase, daughter of Joshua Chase.^[3] She was born about 1831, Portland, ME, and died 1871, Brooklyn, NY.

He, of New York, NY, married thirdly, 2 Feb 1871, Boston, MA, Belinda A. Bentley (Babcock) Elms, daughter of Samuel B. and Julia (Holmes) Babcock.^[4] She was born about 1832, Boston, MA, and died 4 May 1908, Newport or Cranston, RI. She had married firstly, 28 May 1848, Boston, MA, Anson Elms.

He resided Brooklyn, NY, and Boston, MA. In 1858 he was a chairmaker living on Brooks St., Boston, MA.

Children of Joseph S.⁸ and Harriet S. (Scott) Whitney: probably one, because wife died in childbirth, but no record found.

i.	Mary Amanda9 Whitney, b. 13 Sep 1855, Templeton, MA;[5] m. 18 May 1870, Henry Finegar; resided 164 Linden St., near Central Ave., Brooklyn, NY. He was b. 4 Mar 1849; is a book-keeper. Ch.: Joseph Henry, b. 2 June 1872; d. 2 Jun 1872; Emma Francis, b. 25 Apr 1873; Harry, b. 23 Dec 1878; d. 22 Aug 1879.
ii.	Walter James Whitney, b. 7 Jan 1858, Boston, MA.[6]
iii.	William Francis Whitney, b. 24 Jul 1859, Chelsea, MA;[7] is a member of the Third Artillery at San Antonio, TX.
iv.	Annie Laura Whitney, b. 24 Jan 1865, NY; m. 28 Jul 1883, Herbert L. Browning; resided East Templeton, MA. He was b. 1858; is a farmer. Ch.: Lorena May, b. 1884; Alice Emma, b. 1886.
v.	Emma E. Whitney, b. ca. 1866, New York, NY; m. 6 Aug 1884, Templeton, MA, George W. Mason, b. ca. 1864, Gardner, MA, son of Benjamin S. and Louisa B. (-----) Mason;[8] resided East Templeton, MA.
