Eastern Minnesota was part of the Northwest Territory from 1787 to 1800, Indiana Territory 1800-1809, Illinois Territory 1809-1818, Michigan Territory 1818-1836, Wisconsin Territory 1836-1848. Western Minnesota was part of the Louisiana Purchase 1803-1812, Missouri Territory 1812-1821, unorganized 1821-1834, Michigan Territory 1834-1836, Wisconsin Territory 1836-1838, Iowa Territory 1838-1848. In 1848, Minnesota became a territory, and in 1858, a state. Census records for Minnesota are available for the following years:
