Alpheus Whitney

While I cannot tell you how you connect to the early Whitney family of New England, I did find your ancestor Alpheus Whitney in the 1850 Census:
Prospect, Waldo Co., Maine, p. 168:
62 73 Alpheus Whitney 38 M - Trader N.H. Sarah C. " 40 F - Me. Lavinia " 8 F - Vt. Attended school Sarah A. " 6 F - Vt. Attended school John A. " 4 M - Me. Attended school Isaac D. " 6/12 M - Mass. Nancy R. Crockett 16 F - Maine Attended school
So Alpheus was born in New Hampshire. Apparently he moved around quite a lot. Looking for a vital record in Massachusetts for his birth would be futile. Also, I found that Alpheus Whitney married Sarah C. Fletcher on 30 Aug 1840, Watertown, MA, using www.familysearch.org.
In 1860, he was in Stockton, Waldo Co., ME.
I haven't found them in 1870, but their son John A. Whitney was still in Stockton, and I. D. (recorded as "J. D.") and his sister Sarah A. Whitney were in "Clark or Wells", Faribault Co., MN.
In 1880, he was living in Minnesota:
Minneapolis Township, Dist. No. 2, Hennepin Co., Minnesota, p. 15:
115 117 Whitney, Alpheus W M 67 Husband mar Farmer New Hampshire Mass. N.H. -------, Sarah C. W F 70 Wife mar Keeps house Maine Maine Maine Joslin, Morenus W M 37 Son-in-law mar Carpenter New York N.Y. N.Y. ------, Sarah A. W F 36 Daughter mar Keeps house Vermont N.H. Maine ------, Alpheus W M 8 Grandson Attended school Minnesota N.Y. Vt. ------, Clara L. W F 4 G.daughter Minnesota N.Y. Vt.
This tells us that Alpheus's father was born in Massachusetts and his mother in New Hampshire.
You could try for a death certificate for Alpheus Whitney in Minnesota after 1880 (likewise for Sarah C. (Fletcher) Whitney). That might give the names of his parents.
