James Holbrook8 Whitney (John7, John6, James5, James4, John3, Jonathan2, John1), son of John7 and Clarissa (Slack) Whitney, was born 1804, Boston, MA.

He married Mary R. Rutgers.

He was born in Boston and early engaged in the hardware trade; finally moved to New York City and formed the firm of Whitney & Mcfarland, and then failed in 1837 and took up iron brokerage business and was in it all his life and was quite successful; resided New York City.

Children of James Holbrook8 and Mary R. (Rutgers) Whitney:

i. Charles William Whitney, b. 17 Jan 1831; m. Victoria Lockwood.
ii. Mary H. Whitney, b. 1832; d. 1846.
iii. John Henry Whitney, b. 1833; resided N.Y.C.
iv. Alfred R. Whitney, b. 26 Feb 1835; m.(1) Adaline P. Nesbitt; m.(2) Mary L. Freeman.
v. Cornelia Whitney, b. 1837; d. 1841.
vi. Clementina Whitney, b. 1839; d. 1842.
