I. Charles Merrill Clarke, b. in Manlius, N. Y., 8 Oct. 1834; a physician and surgeon; grad. in the Medical Department of the University of the City of New York, 4 March 1857; practised his profession in Wisconsin and Illinois during the years 1858, 1589, and 1860; entered the 39th Reg., Ill. Vol. Inf., as assistant-surgeon, in 1861; full surgeon, 3 June 1872; continued in service till 9 Dec. 1865, filling the positions of Brigade and Division Surgeon (having in charge the 10th Army Corps' field hospital, and subsequently the 24th Army Corps' hospital at Richmond, Va.), and finally of Chief Medical Officer of the District of Norfolk, Va., and in charge of Park Hospital. After the war, he settled in practice at Chicago, Ill., where he was married, 22 Feb. 1866, by Rev. Z. M. Humphrey, D. D., Presbyterian, to Julia R. Hamill, whose father,, Robert C. Hamill, M. D., then lived in Chicago. She was born at Bloomington, Indiana, 18 May 1843, and died in April 1872. They lived at Chicago, in 1868; his office being at corner of State and Twelfth Street.
