Springfield was organized in 1636. Part was split off as Westfield in 1669. The Springfield Mountain part was split off as Wilbraham. The Stony Hill part was split off as Ludlow in 1774, and another part was used to create West Springfield, also in 1774. Part was split off as Longmeadow in 1783. Land was given to Wilbraham in 1799. Part was split off as Chicopee in 1848. Territory was gained from Longmeadow in 1890.
