Family:Whitney, Edwin (1829-1867)
Edwin8 Whitney (Ebenezer7, Ebenezer6, Ebenezer5, Ezekiel4, Ebenezer3, Richard2, John1), son of Ebenezer7 and Anis (Kingsbury) Whitney, was born 8 Mar 1829, and died 26 Aug 1867, in his 39th year [sic]. He is buried in New Storrs Cemetery, Storrs, CT.[1]
He married, 31 Oct 1860, Hartford, CT, Minerva Barrows, daughter of Salmon and Sally (Dimock) Barrows. She was born 10 Sep 1830, Mansfield, CT, and died 17 Jan 1927. She is buried in New Storrs Cemetery, Storrs, CT.[2]
He graduated at the Connecticut Normal School, 9 Oct 1856. Was assistant superintendent and principal teacher of the reform school, Providence, RI. He gave his farm in Mansfield, worth $15,000 for the benefit of the Soldiers' Orphan Home. Was Superintendant of the same when he died, in his thirty-ninth year, greatly lamented. His life was insured for $10,000. His wife was also a graduate of the same school.

i. Frank Barrows9 Whitney, b. ca. 10 Feb 1863; d. 3 Nov 1863, aged 8 months 23 days. He is buried in New Storrs Cemetery, Storrs, Mansfield, CT.[3] ii. Mary Whitney, b. ca. 3 Sep 1866; d. 26 Aug 1867, aged 11 months 23 days. She is buried in New Storrs Cemetery, Storrs, Mansfield, CT.[4] iii. Edwina Maud Whitney, b. 26 Feb 1868 (posthumously), Mansfield, CT; d. 3 Sep 1970, Mansfield, CT, aged 102 years; unmarried. - "A descendant of two of Mansfield's early families, Edwina Maud Whitney was born February 26, 1868, the daughter of Edwin and Minerva (Barrows) Whitney. She graduated from Oberlin College in 1894, and after a few years of teaching, she returned to Mansfield where she remained for the rest of her life.
- "She was appointed librarian of the Connecticut Agricultural College [the predecessor of the University of Connecticut] in 1900, a position she held for 34 years. During part of her tenure at the college, she also taught German, English, and American literature. Active in church, women's groups, college and community activities she was frequently asked to speak. Her remarks on local history, literature, church and missions, the College, and the importance of preserving landmarks were always enlightening, entertaining, and enthusiastically received.
- "Later the University of Connecticut fittingly named a dormitory and a campus road after her family. She was also honored by the Mansfield Historical Society and became their first honorary member.
- "Shortly after her appointment as librarian, she began to keep a diary. These diaries are important not only as a record of her life but as a chronicle of the changing scene in and around Mansfield from 1901 to 1951. The diaries were given to the Mansfield Historical Society by Miss Whitney in 1960.
- "Her comments throughout her diaries are frequently shrewd observations and reflect the intellect and personality of a woman of strong opinions, outspoken, fiesty, witty and mentally keen. She remained thus throughout her long life. She died at the age of 102 September 3, 1970."[5]
