Edwin Emerson9 Whitney (Peter Isaac8, Zerah7, James6, Samuel5, Samuel4, Nathaniel3, John2, John1), son of Peter Isaac8 and Betsey (Porter) Whitney, was born 14 Aug 1843, Cascade, MI, and died after 1880.
He married, 25 Dec 1866, Wayland, MI, Harriett Lucina Button, daughter of John Avery and Mary Anna (Lowton) Button. She was born 1 Mar 1848, Coldwater, MI, and died after 1880.
He enlisted in 1862 in Company B, 6th Regiment Michigan Cavalry; mustered out at Fort Leavenworth, KS, in 1865. For sometime he was a scout, employed by General Philip Sheridan; resided Sand Lake, MI.
Phoenix says the following:
- "Edwin Emerson Whitney, b. at Cascade, Mich., 14 Aug. 1843; a sawyer; married at Wayland, Mich., 25 Dec. 1866, by Rev. James Selkrig, to Harriet Lucina Button, who was born at Coldwater, Mich., 1 March 1848, dau. of John Avery and Mary Anna (Lowton) Button. They settled at Sand Lake, Mich., and were living there in Aug. 1874. He enlisted at Grand Rapids, Mich., 19 Sept. 1862, in Co. B, 6th Reg., Mich. Cavalry; and was mustered out at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, 29 Nov. 1865. He was employed, for nine months, as a scout for Gen. Sheridan."
