Family:Whitney, Etta May (1854-1927)
Etta May8 Whitney (Lewis7, Stephen6, Stephen5, Isaac4, Nathaniel3, Benjamin2, John1), daughter of Lewis7 and Mary Ellen (Strout) Whitney, was born 26 May 1854, Portland, ME, and died 29 Jan 1927, Elkins, WV.
She married, firstly, 1 Jun 1875, Portland, ME, Harmon Edmund Phinney, son of Edmund and Betsey (Hayford) Phinney. He was born 16 Apr 1850, Portland, ME.
Etta May and Harmon Phinney were divorced 16 Oct 1888 in Cumberland Co., ME.
Etta married, secondly, 5 Mar 1900, Cambridge, MA, George Ingersoll Johnson Wheelock, son of Alonzo P. and Catherine (Watson) Wheelock.[1] George was a Civil War veteran, and consistently reports in his pension file his birth as 13 April 1846, Biddeford, ME. This is inconsistent with the vital records of Portland, ME, which report it as 7 Apr 1848. The latter is confirmed by the marriage record, which calls him aged 52 years.
Etta was George's third marriage. He had married, firstly, 8 Aug 1880, Boston, MA, Charlotte Elizabeth "Lizzie" Cate. She was born about 1854, Bow, NH, daughter of Meshach and Hannah Cate. She died 5 Jan 1887, Boston, MA. He had married secondly, 11 Nov 1890, Boston, MA, Edna M. (Powell) Landis. She was born about 1860, Patriot, IN, daughter of Jacob and Sarah E. (Dibble) Powell. She died 4 Aug 1893, Boston, MA.
George and Etta May were residents of Cambridge, MA. Both died in Elkins, WV. George died there while visiting, probably with Annie Maud (Phinney) McIntosh, Etta May's daughter. Annie's husband, Dr. Ernest R. McIntosh signed George's death certificate.
Etta may have resided in Elkins after the death of her husband. Both are buried in the Elkins Memorial Gardens, Elkins, WV.
Children of Harmon Edmund and Etta May8 (Whitney) Phinney:
i. Annie Maud Phinney, b. ca. 1876, Portland, ME; m. Dr. Ernest R. McIntosh. ii. Louis Whitney Phinney, b. 1 Dec 1877, Portland, ME. iii. Edmund Strout Phinney, b. 1 Dec 1882, Deering, ME.
George Ingersoll Johnson Wheelock had no children by any of his three wives.
Notes
Harmon Edmund Phinney, Etta May's first husband, was a great-grandson of Edmund and Sarah (Hamblen) Phinney, and great-great-grandson of Joseph and Hannah5 (Whitney) Hamblen, and thus also a Whitney descendant.
