James Clement8 Whitney (Sewall7, Jacob6, Ebenezer5, Amos4, Nathaniel3, Benjamin2, John1), son of Sewall7 and Elizabeth (Fly) Whitney, was born 11 Aug 1857, Gorham, ME, and died after 1940.

He married, 29 Nov 1877, Methuen, MA, Harriet Reynolds Austin/Whittier, daughter of Hiram and Harriet Barker (Spofford) Austin.[1] Edward's birth record calls her Harriet R. Whittier, who was born in Pelham, NH. Mary's calls her Harriet Austin, born Methuen, MA. The 1880 and subsequent censuses agree with the birth of Harriet Reynolds Austin, 3 Jul 1848, Boxford (recorded in Methuen, given name omitted) or Methuen (recorded in Dracut), MA, and parents born in MA. Their own marriage record calls her Harriet R. Whittier, daughter of the Austin couple, and a first marriage for both. Why she changed her name from Austin to Whittier is a mystery.
