John Jay7 Whitney (Benjamin Cady6, Cornelius5, Joshua4, Cornelius3, Joshua2, John1), son of Benjamin Cady6 and Betsey (Marchant) Whitney, was born 11 Aug 1837, Conesus, NY, and died after 1880.

He married, 29 Jun 1861, Agnes Reynolds Tew. She was born about 1838, NY, and died between 1870 and 1880.

He married secondly, before 1880, Sarah -----. She was born about 1837, NY, and died after 1880.

He resided Jamestown, NY, and 41 Union Park, Boston, MA.

i. Willis Rodney8 Whitney, b. 26 Aug 1868; d. 9 Jan 1958; m. 1890, Evelyn Jones; resided Jamestown, NY. Chemical/electrical engineer. While teaching at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1896-1904), he began to work with General Electric (1901) and ended up staying with the firm until 1954, at one stage serving as vice-president (1938-1941). He was director of research at G.E. in Schenectady, NY, where he found its laboratory and helped make G.E. a leader in lighting and other applications of electricity. His innovations in such items as the tungsten filament and the X-ray tube led to his ho;ding over 40 patents. Elected to the National Academy of Sciences, 1917. Daughter Evelyn J. Whitney, b. May 1892, NY; d. aft. 1900.
ii. Carolyn Whitney, b. 9 Jun 1870; m. 9 Sep 1890, George Wells Barrett; resided Jamestown, NY.
