Family:Whitney, Minor Merrick (c1802-1847)
Minor Merrick Whitney, parentage unknown, was born about 1802, NY, and died 26 Nov 1847, Amite Co., MS.
He married, firstly, 28 Dec 1825, Amite Co., MS, Penelope Lowry.[1] She was born circa 1802, and died 16 Aug 1834, Liberty, Amite Co., MS.[2]
He married, secondly, 1 Jan 1835, Amite Co., MS, Sophia Wilson.[3] She was born circa 1817, Amite Co., MS, and died after 1860. She married, secondly, 21 Oct 1854, Amite Co., MS, James R. Aumock.[4]
In Mar 1833 he was appointed a commissioner for the estate of Orain Hicks.[5]
On 28 Mar 1835, he was listed as a Ranger in Amite Co., MS.[6]
In 1846 his daughters Amelia and Penelope sued him in the Mississippi Supreme Court.[7]

i. Amelia Maria Whitney, b. ca. 1828, Amite Co., MS. She m. (1) 10 May 1849, Amite Co., MS, J. E. Smith;[8] m.(2) 11 Mar 1852, Amite Co., MS, Charles Haynes McLain.[9] ii. Penelope Angelina Whitney, b. say 1833, probably Amite Co., MS. She was almost certainly the Angelina Whitney who m. 1853, Clinton, LA, William L. Neilson. She may have died after 1860 as her husband d. 1862 and did not mention her in his will.[10]
Possible children of Minor Merrick and Sophia (Wilson) Whitney (relationship not yet ascertained, probably not all are children but may have been daughter-in-law and/or grandchildren):
iii. Rebecca E. Whitney, b. ca. 1838, Amite Co., MS; m. 15 Oct 1851, Amite Co., MS, Samuel B. Bates.[11] iv. Daniel Davis Whitney, b. 7 May 1843, Amite Co., MS; d. 20 Apr 1848, Amite Co., MS. v. Minor M. Whitney, b. Jun 1847, Amite Co., MS; m. Mary Alameda Cotten. vi. Alice S. Whitney, b. ca. Dec 1849, Amite Co., MS. She appears to have been a granddaughter.
