Family:Whitney, Cyrus (c1829-1882)
Cyrus Whitney, parentage unknown but perhaps son of Family:Whitney, Benjamin (1797-1830), was born about 1828 or 1830, Chautauqua Co., NY, and died 10 Jan 1882, MO.
He married firstly, 29 Jan 1848, French Creek, NY, Mary Burrows. She was born about 1833, NY, and apparently died between 1850 and 1860.
He married secondly, 2 Oct 1869, Clinton Co., IL, Martha J. Edwards, daughter of John Edwards. She was born 1 Jan 1847, IL, and died 1 Jan 1929, AR.
Children of Cyrus and Martha (Edwards) Whitney:
i. Alice Whitney, b. ca. 1863, IL. Because she was born before Cyrus's second marriage, her maternity is uncertain. Possibly Cyrus had another wife, between Mary and Martha. ii. My husbands g-grandfather, CYRUS WHITNEY was born in Chautauqua County, NY about 1830. As family history goes, his parents died when he was young and he was "bound out" to an uncle. I am hoping to find who Cyrus's parents were and if he had any siblings.
Some years ago, I was in contact with Alice WHITNEY Peterson, who was from the area. (She has since passed on.) She seemed to think that CYRUS could have been the son of Benjamin WHITNEY (1797-1830). I believe Benjamin was the brother of Aaron WHITNEY. Does anyone know this family, who could tell me who Benjamin's children were?
I also know that CYRUS was married on Jan. 29th, 1848 to Mary Burrows, both of French Creek.
On the 1850 Census for French Creek, Chautauqua County, NY, CYRUS is listed with (Meavy) Mary. No children.
I have a deed, dated Oct. 10, 1851 that mentions some 137 acres of land (French Creek) that a CYRUS & Mary WHITNEY owned.
I have another deed, dated Nov. 13, 1850 that mentions a Cirus & Cornelius WHITNEY. Alice (mentioned above) seemed to think the two could be brothers.
Cyrus left the area about 1855 to go to Wisconsin. He is found working as a farm hand, living with the family of Levi Knapp (who was from Chautauqua Co. also) on the 1860 Census for Rock County, Wis. Mary is not listed with him.
I know Cyrus's basic movements from there. He did marry again and father children. He died 1882 in Dunklin Co. Missouri. What I don't know is who his parents were and siblings. - Whitney Family.
