Robert Whitney (John, Edward), son of John and Mary (Grant or Twitchell) Whitney, was born about 1822, ME, and died 12 May 1896. He is buried in the West Broadway Cemetery, Lincoln, ME.

He married 3 Dec 1846, Portland, ME, Mary E. Bennett, both of Portland.[1] She was born about 1825, ME, and died 3 Jun 1887. In 1850, Mercy Bennett, born about 1796, ME, was residing with the family and may possibly have been Mary E.'s mother.

Robert Whitney served in the Civil War. He enrolled at Chesterville, ME, in Company A of the 28th Regiment of the Maine Volunteer Infantry commanded by Seth M. Hutchins on 10 September 1862. His enrollment was for a period of 9 months. He was honorably discharged at Augusta, ME, on 31 August 1863.

In 1886, Robert Whitney applied for and received a pension for his Civil War service.
