Harriet "Hattie" Frances7 Whitney (Elias Scott6, Nathan5, Benjamin4, John3, Benjamin2, John1), daughter of Elias Scott6 and Sarah (Godfrey) Whitney, was born Sep 1848, Augusta, ME, and died 1927, Quincy, MA.

She married, 20 Nov 1877, Haverhill, MA, Samuel H. Greenleaf, son of Samuel E. and Sarah (Hale) Greenleaf.[1] He was born 26 Jan 1836, Haverhill, MA, and died 6 Oct 1903, Bridgewater State Farm, Bridgewater, MA. Hattie and Samuel Greenleaf were divorced.

Samuel H. Greenleaf had married firstly, 4 Jan 1859, Essex Co., MA, Cassadana F. Richardson, daughter of Charles and Mary Richardson. She was born about 1839, Methuen, MA. She and Samuel Greenleaf were divorced, and she subsequently married, 17 May 1877, Methuen, MA, Amos Higgins of Rome, ME.

Samuel H. Greenleaf had married secondly, 25 Aug 1870, Springfield, MA, Eda A. Varney, daughter of John and Mary W. (-----) Varney. She was born about 1847, Malone, NY.

Samuel H. Greenleaf was a Civil War Veteran, and received a pension from the U.S. government. He was buried 8 Oct 1903, Haverhill, MA.

Judging by census and vital records information, Samuel Greenleaf was not entirely truthful with the Bureau of Pensions concerning his marriage history. The one marriage he admits to is to Cassadana F. Richardson. That marriage is documented in Essex Co., MA, on 4 Jan 1859. He is documented in that record as a painter. Samuel and Cassadana are found in the 1860 Census of Haverhill, MA. In the household is their infant child Martha Jane and his mother, Sarah. Samuel testifies that Cassadana divorced him during his service in the war. Samuel had 2 children with Cassadana who are documented in the birth and death records of Haverhill, MA: Martha Jane and Charles J. Both died in infancy of cholera.

The Vital Records of Springfield, MA, reveal the marriage of Samuel H. Greenleaf to Eda A. Varney on 25 Aug 1870 in Springfield. She was born about 1847, Malone, NY. They are found residing in Boston, MA, in the 1870 Census (indexed as Limon Greenleaf). Nothing more has yet been found about Eda A. (Varney) Greenleaf. Military records show that Samuel resided in the Soldiers Home in Steuben, NY in 1899. His marital status is widower, so perhaps Eda (Varney) Greenleaf had died.

The Vital Records of Haverhill, MA, reveal the marriage of Samuel H. Greenleaf to Harriet Frances Whitney, 20 Nov 1877, Haverhill. They are found in the 1880 Census of Haverhill, where he is shown as a painter. They must have divorced, since Hattie remarried.

Hattie7 (Whitney) Greenleaf married secondly, 24 Jun 1889, Bradford, MA (recorded in Brockton, MA), William Henry Tobey, son of Ezra and Mary (Bassett) Tobey.[2] He was born 11 Apr 1840, Sandwich, MA, and died 4 Feb 1909, Brockton, MA. He is buried in the Union Cemetery, Brockton, MA. They both resided in Brockton, MA, at the time of their marriage. He was a furniture dealer and she a school teacher. Hattie was his second marriage. He had married firstly, 24 Apr 1864, North Bridgewater, MA, Helen Maria Bumpas, daughter of Elisha B., and Olive (-----) Bumpas. She was born about 1842, North Bridgewater, MA.

Children of Samuel H. and Cassadana F. (Richardson) Greenleaf:

i. Martha Jane Greenleaf, b. 11 Nov 1859, Haverhill, MA; d. 27 Jul 1860, Haverhill, MA.
ii. Charles J. Greenleaf, b. 8 Jan 1861, Haverhill, MA; d. 4 Sep 1861, Haverhill, MA.
