:He was born in Canaan, Conn.  According to the probate records he chose Col. David WHITNEY, of C., his guardian Feb. 17, 1759.  He was then called son of Joshua, formerly of Preston, deceased.  He was living in Salisbury, Conn., in 1770, and moved to Pittsfield, Mass., in 1793.  He engaged in farming and later in the manufacture of iron, which was largely made into anchors for ships, also in mercantile business. His eldest son and Asa were associated with him.  He was accidentally killed.  Record of service of a Joshua WHITNEY in Revolutionary war, viz: "Private in the 3d Conn. Regt. from May 19 to Nov. 13, 1775.  Enlisted March 15, 1776, in Capt. Joel DICKINSON's Co., in Col. Samuel ELMORE's Continental Regiment of Connecticut for 1 year.  Was promoted Sergt.  Enlisted in 8th regiment, 'Connecticut line,' in early part of 1777.  Appointed Sergt. Joshua5 Whitney (Joshua4, William3, Joshua2, John1), son of Joshua4 and Anna (?Blodgett?) Whitney, was born 16 Jan 1744/5, Preston, CT,[1], baptized 20 Jan 1745, Preston, CT, and died 1808.[2]

He "of Salisbury" married, 9 Jan 1770, Salisbury, CT, Anna Ashley "of Sheffield",[3] daughter of Noah and Miriam (Porter) Ashley, by John Ashley, J.P. She was born 20 Feb 1748, Warren, MA.
