He (as "George M. Whiting") married 24 Dec 1867, St. Johns, MI, Charlotte Wilber,[3] daughter of Samuel and Margareta (Putman) Wilber. She was born about 1850, Tekonsha, Calhoun Co., MI, and died before 1900, possibly Ovid, MI.
George enlisted Co. I, 16th Michigan Infantry Regiment on 28 Feb 1862. Mustered out on 17 Nov 1865.
On 5 Mar 1897, from Michigan, he applied for a pension for service in Co. I, 16th Michigan Infantry, and Co. E, 22nd Volunteer Reserve Corps, Application #1,186,888, Certificate #1,031,871.[4]
