WHITNEY, became 61st commonest name in New England. 1 BENJAMIN, tailor, Dover, York, born at Watertown 6 June 1643, son of John and Elinor. Taxed Cochecho 1666. In Mar. 1670-1 he sold to a brother the interest in the Watertown homestead given him by his father in the hope he would return to it. York 1672, grand jury 1679, Oath of Allegiance Mar. 1679-80. A 10 acre grant was laid out to him by Philip Cooper's, on which he had lived 'these several yrs.' when he and wife Jane sold, with another 10 acres, to Jonathan Sayward 24 Mar. 1684-5. York witness 1686? (York Deeds 4: 159). Of Sherborn 1687 where wife Jane died 14 Mar. 1690. Of Framingham, he married 2d at Marlboro 11 Apr. 1695 Mary Poore; died at Sherborn 1723.
