Nathan was a son of Ira Whitney, settled in Youngsville in 1824, and died in 1862. Ira A. embarked in the mercantile trade in Pittsfield in 1873, dealing extensively in all classes of merchandise, grain, seeds, feed, flour, lumber, shingles, clothing, boots and shoes, and does a general barter business to accommodate his farming trade.
