+ | On 3 March 1873 Congress granted burial rights in national military cemeteries to all honorably discharged veterans of the Civil War (17 Stat. 625). An act of Congress of 3 February 1879 (20 Stat. 281) extended the privilege of government-provided gravestones to soldiers buried in private cemeteries.
+ | |||
+ | On Microfilm 1845, Series 628, the soldiers are Union Civil War Soldiers who died between 1861 and 1903, with a few War of 1812 veterans and are buried in private cemeteries. The stones provided are ca. 1879 to ca. 1903. One contractor for the headstones was D.W. Whitney. (Note: some stones are provided to graves on government property- KLW)

+ | Note: This collection contains the actual applications which were sent to the Quartermaster General’s Office during this time period. Each state has its own collection. Applications are filed first by state, and then by county. The counties are arranged alphabetically in folders in the file boxes. The applications were either on official government forms, or were letters. The official applications have space for many applications at one time, accommodating all of those veterans buried in one cemetery.

Applications to the Quartermaster General's office for provision of gravestone markers for the graves of veterans buried in private cemeteries.
Whitney Extracts From: Microfilm M1845, Series 62, Roll #22 Card Records of Headstones Provided for Deceased Union Civil War Veterans, ca. 1879 to 1903 The National Archives Building, Washington, D.C. On 3 March 1873 Congress granted burial rights in national military cemeteries to all honorably discharged veterans of the Civil War (17 Stat. 625). An act of Congress of 3 February 1879 (20 Stat. 281) extended the privilege of government-provided gravestones to soldiers buried in private cemeteries.
On Microfilm 1845, Series 628, the soldiers are Union Civil War Soldiers who died between 1861 and 1903, with a few War of 1812 veterans and are buried in private cemeteries. The stones provided are ca. 1879 to ca. 1903. One contractor for the headstones was D.W. Whitney. (Note: some stones are provided to graves on government property- KLW)
