William Whitney (William), son of William and Martha (Millett) Whitney, was born about 1818, Gloucester, MA, was baptized 6 Sep 1817, Gloucester, MA,[1] and died after 1860.

He married firstly, Abigail R. Morse, daughter of Elihu and Betsey (Houghton) Morse. She was born 24 Aug 1824, Brookfield, VT,[2] and died 21 Nov 1846, aged 22 years 2 months 27 days, Milford, MA.[3]

He, of Boston, MA, married secondly, 22 Feb 1849, Brookfield, VT, Lucy Jane Morse,[4] daughter of Elijah and Olive (Herrick) Morse. She was born 24 Nov 1828, Brookfield, VT,[5] and died 22 Feb 1861, Brookfield, VT, aged 32 years.[6] She was a first cousin of his first wife.

They lived in Boston and Milford, MA, and Brookfield, VT.

Children of William and Abigail R. (Morse) Whitney, probably incomplete:

i. Abby A. Whitney, b. 5 Jan 1845, Boston, MA;[7] d. aft. 1860.
ii. Orraett Whitney, b. 10 Nov 1847, Milford, MA;[8] "Orra F." in 1850 census. See Notes below.

Children of William and Lucy Jane (Morse) Whitney, probably incomplete:

iii. Lucy Whitney, b. ca. 1852, VT; d. 4 Jul 1872, Boston, MA;[9] m. 1 Jul 1871, Boston, MA, Henry C. Hirsch.[10]
iv. William Whitney, b. ca. 1857, VT.
iv. Mary Melvina Whitney, b. 21 Jan 1861 Brookfield, VT.[11]

Notes

The death of Abigail R. Whitney on 21 Nov 1846 is just less than a year before the recorded birth of child Orraett, above. It seems very likely that there was an error in the birth year of the child, and that Abigail R. was the wife and mother in this family group, who died from the after-effects of childbirth.
