Joseph5 Whitney (Abel4, Nathaniel3, Benjamin2, John1), son of Abel4 and Mary (Cane) Whitney, was born 1 Mar 1738/9, Wiscasset, ME,[1] and died 13 Mar 1819, probabaly Gorham, ME.
He married firstly, 3 Oct 1765, Gorham, ME, Mehitable Stevens,[2] daughter of Benjamin and Sarah (Pride) Stevens. She was born 15 Jul 1750, Gorham, ME, and died before Sep 1781, probably Gorham, ME.
Marriage intentions were published 22 Sep 1781, Gorham, ME,[3] for him and his second wife Betty Phinney. She was born 1 Apr 1759, Gorham, ME, and died 14 Feb 1828, Gorham, ME, aged 69 years.[4]
Before 25 May 1819, Gorham, ME, Edmund Phinney was appointed administrator of his estate.

Marcy Whitney, b. 31 Oct 1776;[11] "Mercy" m. 24 Jun 1801, Gorham, ME, Joseph Libby.[12] Joseph was born in Gorham on 13 June 1780, the son of Joseph and Mary (Huston) Libby. Joseph died 2 Apr 1843 in Gorham, and Mercy died 22 May 1860 in Portland, ME. They had seven children, all born in Gorham. v. Solomon Whitney, b. 23 Jun 1780;[13] m. Phebe Gilkey.

Susannah was the dau. of Moses and Susannah (Crockett) Whitney of Harrison, ME. iv. Sarah Whitney, b. 3 Dec 1788;[17] m. 24 Dec 1809, in Gorham, ME, Edmund Gammon. She died 19 March 1875, and he died 4 August 1841. They had two children. v. Hannah Whitney, b. 16 Oct 1791;[18] m. 10 Jan 1812, prob. Gorham, ME, Clark Dyer. vi. Betty Whitney, b. 1 Apr 1794;[19] m. 7 May 1817, prob. Gorham, ME, Samuel Gilkey. vii. Peggy Whitney, b. 10 Nov 1796.[20] viii. Edmund Whitney, b. 7 Dec 1799;[21] m. Mary McLean. ix.
