Josiah Bumstead8 Whitney (Frederick H.7, Barnabas6, Timothy5, Jonas4, Moses3, Richard2, John1), son of Frederick H.7 and Abigail B. (Bumstead) Whitney, was born 15 Jul 1846, Dedham, MA,[1] and died 7 Nov 1923, Los Angeles, CA, of carcinoma and mitral insufficiency. He was buried in Los Angeles National Cemetery, Los Angeles, CA.[2]

He married, 12 Jul 1870, Boston, MA, Elizabeth Gately, dau. of Thomas and Ellen (-----) Gately.[3] She was born about 1851, Milton, MA.

On 6 Aug 1863 at Boston, MA, he enlisted as a Private in Co. F, 2nd Massachusetts Heavy Artillery. He was described as a clerk, aged 18 years. He was promoted to Full Corporal. Mustered out on 21 Jul 1865, Boston, MA.[4] He suffered from chronic diarrhea and chronic rheumatism.

He was a Protestant born in MA, aged 48 years, 5 feet 10 1/2 inches tall, light complexion, gray eyes, and gray hair. He was a salesman living in Los Angeles, CA, was married, wife Mrs. Elizabeth Whitney of Boston, MA. His pension was $10 when he was admitted on 9 Jul 1894 to the Pacific Branch, National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, in Los Angeles, CA. He died 7 Nov 1923 of carcinoma and mitral insufficiency. His pension certificate number was 907,223. Apparently he was buried in Section 9, Row 1, Number 8.[5]

Not in 1870 or 1880 censuses; no death record found in MA before 1910.
