Moses Moody9 Whitney (Levi B.8, Moses7, Moses6, Ephraim5, Moses4, Moses3, Richard2, John1), son of Levi B.8 and Abigail R. (Wilkins) Whitney, was born 16 Jan 1836, Waterford, ME, and died 15 Feb 1883, Biddeford, ME. He was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Biddeford, ME.[1]

He married, say 1854, Vesta E. Caton. She was born about 1 Nov 1836, ME, and died 15 Jan 1889, Biddeford, ME, aged 52 years 2 months 14 days. She was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Biddeford, ME.[2] Some records call her Sylva, others Sylvesta.

Civil War Draft Registrations Records, 1863-1865: Jun 1863, Biddeford, Whitney, Moses M., 26, White, Machinist, Married, born N.H.

Moses M. Whitney, Biddeford, age 36, enlisted 1 Nov 1863, Lewiston, ME, mustered in 13 Nov 1863 as a Private, Co. K, 29th Maine Infantry. Promoted to Corporal. Moses Whitney, age 26, enlisted 1 or 17 Dec 1861 as a Private in Co. H, 5th Maine Infantry. Mustered out on 16 Jan 1863, discharged due to disability. After discharge, served as Private in Co. 72, 2nd Battalion, Veteran Reserve Corps.

On 7 Aug 1863, Moses M. Whitney applied for an invalid pension, Application #30,116, Certificate #19,404.

On 8 Jun 1883, Sylva Whitney applied for a widow's pension based on his service, Application #305,400, Certificate #204,724.

Notes

One Moses Whitney, of Gorham, NH, married, 2 Sep 1867, Rollinsford, NH, Sylva Keating, of Greenwood, ME.[6] This seems to be the above couple, but the date is in conflict with the births of their children.

Vesta was probably the same as "Sylvester", b. 1 Oct 1835, Lyman, ME, son of Charles and Elmira (Emmons) Caton.
