Charles Smith Whitney (Michael T.), son of Michael T. and Harriet (Smith) Whitney, was born 12 Feb 1824, Gallipolis, OH, and died 1 Apr 1900, Belmont, NY. He was buried in Forest Hills Cemetery, Belmont, NY.
He married firstly, before 1853, Clara Adrianna Parker, daughter of Alvin Earl and Sarah (Parker) Parker. She was born 15 May 1829, VT, and died 12 Oct 1872, Amity, NY. She was buried in Forest Hills Cemetery, Belmont, NY.
He married secondly, between 1872 and 1875, Mary E. (Williams) White. She was born 16 Aug 1845, Ontario Co., NY, and died 15 Sep 1876. She was buried in Forest Hills Cemetery, Belmont, NY.
He married thirdly, betweem 1876 and 1880, Sarah E. -----. She was born about 1848, NY, and died after 1880. They were divorced.
He married fourthly, between 1880 and 1900, Bridget Toomey. She was born Mar 1858, NY, and died after 1900.
- Charles S. Whitney is a son of Michael T. Whitney who was born in Montpelier, Vt. ... In 1835 he sold his farm and engaged in merchandising, and died in 1837. He left a family of 4 children, the oldest, Charles S. Whitney, was born Feb. 12, 1824. He having to "shuffle" for himself (with no schooling after his father's death), engaged in various pursuits, working on a farm by the year, warehouse boy, clerking in a grocery, postoffice, etc., etc., until 1848, when he started in the mercantile business for himself. In 1850 he followed the gold excitement to California, where he remained one year. In 1851 he came to Belmont, married Clara A. Parker, the daughter of A. E. Parker, was engaged a few years in general trade at Belmont with A. E. Parker, finally purchased Mr. Parker's interest, and continued the business several years alone. He was postmaster 6 years under Abraham Lincoln's administration, served 3 terms as supervisor of Amity. He gave up mercantile business and the postoffice in 1866, and has since been engaged in the oil business.
The will of Charles S. Whitney of Belmont was dated 3 Feb 1900, and bequeathed his entire estate to his wife Bridget T. Whitney, whom he made sole executrix. It was proved 25 May 1900.
