No record has been found after birth for putative brother Jonathan.  In particular, he is not found in the census records of Maine from 1800 through 1850, nor in his father's will.  John, known from his father's will, has no recorded birth date.  His census records are erratic in the reporting of his age (1810 and 1840 are right, 1820 makes him 3 years too old, and 1830 maked him 3 years too young), but are more or less consistent with a birth date of 1778.  As a result, I believe that they are one and the same.  Either the birth was recorded incorrectly, or his name was changed, or he chose to use John instead of Jonathan throughout his life.

John6 Whitney (Phineas5, Isaac4, Nathaniel3, Benjamin2, John1), son of Phineas5 and Anna (Morton) Whitney, was born (as "Jonathan"; see notes below) 8 Feb 1778, Gorham, ME,[1] and died after 1832.

Marriage intentions were published 11 Nov 1804, North Yarmouth, ME, for him "Capt." and Mary Walker "of Freeport".[2] He married, 29 Nov 1804, Freeport, ME, Mary Walker. She was born 20 Nov 1784, Freeport, ME, and died 7 Jun 1843, North Yarmouth, ME, aged 58 years.[3]

He lived, 1832, Portland, ME.

Notes

No record has been found after birth for putative brother Jonathan. In particular, he is not found in the census records of Maine from 1800 through 1850, nor in his father's will. John, known from his father's will, has no recorded birth date. His census records are erratic in the reporting of his age (1810 and 1840 are right, 1820 makes him 3 years too old, and 1830 makes him 3 years too young), but are more or less consistent with a birth date of 1778. As a result, I believe that they are one and the same. Either the birth was recorded incorrectly, or his name was changed, or he chose to use John instead of Jonathan throughout his life.
