Jonathan5 Whitney (Isaac4, Nathaniel3, Benjamin2, John1), son of Isaac4 and Sarah (Crosby) Whitney, was born 9 Feb 1757, Saco, ME,[1] or Biddeford, ME (see Biddeford VR, original pg. 232, pg. 35 of the published records)[2], baptized 7 Jul 1757, Biddeford, ME,[3] and died 1 Aug 1819, Gorham, ME,[4] or 9 Sep 1819, Buxton, ME,[5] or 5 Apr 1820, Buxton, ME.[6]

Marriage intentions were published 24 Nov 1781, Gorham, ME, for him "of Buxton" and Mary Blake,[7] daughter of Jonathan Blake (or Nathaniel Blake via Asa P. Whitney genealogy). She was born on 15 Apr ---- (circa 1760), probably Gorham, ME or Cape Cod, and died 2 Sep 1831, Gorham, ME.

A brief note in the "Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire", by Noyes, Libby & David, says of an unidentified Jonathan Whitney "Saco, fort soldier, Lists 248ab". It MAY refer to this man. Further, in "Maine Families in 1790", a Jonathan Whitney "of Buxton" is identified as the father of a Mary Whitney (see wife's name) who married George W. Whitney of Gorham (the next town over) - STRONGLY suggestive of but not proving her descent from this man.

He lived at Buxton, ME.

I Jonathan Whitney, aged sixty-one years, of Brownfield in the County of Oxford and Commonwealth of Massachusetts testify and declare on oath that I served in the war of the Revolution on the Continental Establishment against the common enemy about four year. I first enlisted at Buxton, Massachusetts for one year, about January AD 1776 into Capt. Stuart's Company belonging to Col. Phinney's Regiment in the Massachusetts Line. When I had served out that year, I then enlisted into Capt. Josiah Jenkins' Company, belonging to Col. Brewer's Regiment and General Patterson's Brigade. When I had served that time out, I was discharged about January AD 1780 at Fishkills, and have lost my discharge. I further say that from my reduced circumstances in life, I am in need of assistance from my country for support. I at the storming of Stoney Point & in the battle of Monmuth & taking of Burgoyne. 11 April, 1818

From a letter in the military pension record summarizing the record:

He enlisted at Buxton, Massachusetts, about January, 1776, and served on year as private in Captain Wentworth Stuart's company in Colonel Edmund Phinney's Massachusetts Regiment. He immediately enlisted and served three years as private in Captain Josiah Jenkin's Company in Colonel Samuel Brewer's Massachusetts regiment and was at the surrender of Burgoyne, the battle of Monmouth and the battle of Stoney Point.
He was allowed pension on his application executed April 11, 1818, at which time he was a resident of Brownfield, Oxford County, Massachusetts, aged sixty-one years.

Testimony of Capt. Josiah Jenkins:

Gorham, 21 July, 1818
I certify that Jonathan Whitney of Brownfield, County of Oxford, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, entered the service of the United States, and served the first eight months in Captain Wentworth Stewart's Company, Colonel Edmund Phinney's Regt. til the last of the year 1776, at that time he entered my Company in Col. Samuel Brewer's Regiment, General John Patterson's Brigade; and served the term of three years and was discharged at Fishkill in the State of New York, he was at the taking of Burgoyne, The Battle of Monmouth and storming Stoney Point, he is of advanced age and in reduced circumstances, and I am in no doubt of his need of assistance from his Country.
