WHITNEY, A. W. In History of Windsor County [Vermont], Pt.2, p. 851, there is a biographical sketch about John D. POWERS. It contains a reference as follows:
- "For the next twenty years he was an employee of the Daniels' Machine Company of Woodstock, and afterwards with A. W. Whitney & Co. for five years. He then again turned his attention to farming, which he followed until his retirement from active business in 1875."
Is anyone familiar with this company? I have not found any reference to it in this history with this exception. Who was the owner/owners, where was it located and what type of business? Thanks for any help you can give.

Who were his parents?
He may have been related to Stilman WHITNEY, son of Edward and Rhoda, b. 14 Mar 1815, Royalston (he appears in the census records online), who also moved to Yarmouth, U.C. in 1840 (is shown on land records - Artemus isn't), disposed of his land in 1844 and moved to Michigan. He died about 1870 in the Grand Rapids area as well I believe. Given the proximity of ages and travel locations, they surely were travelling together and it is quite possible that they were closely related.
WHITNEY, B., m. James COLLUM of Barraghmore, Drumlish, Co. Longford, Ireland. Their daughter, my grandmother, Moriah COLLUM was born in 1864 and died in 1936. She married Patrick McCABE, b. in 1853, from Corduff South, Cloone, Co. Leitrim, Ireland. Can anyone supply more data about her and her ancestry?

WHITNEY, Bourne King, my great-grandfather, left the area outside the former city of Newcastle, in the Miramichi area of New Brunswick, when young, moved to Moncton and eventually to Canso, NS, where he married Elizabeth TAYLOR. He was a builder and I do not know if there were others in his family but my own grandfather saw to that with 11 children, 9 sons one of whom was my father.

Some state census records indicate she was b. ca 1784 Rennsalaer Co., NY (1855 Solon, Cortland Co., NY); other census records indicate b. 1790 NY. I have no further info on Clarissa. Who were her parents, and when and where was she born? Was she related to her mother-in-law Sarah?

Family lore has it that he died in 1906 while a student in San Francisco, leading to the assumption that he died during THE earthquake and fire. Does anyone have any info and/or sources?

WHITNEY, Daniel James, b. ca. 1834, NY, m. Dilly Jane (Jennie) FLINT. Their first child was my grandfather Harvey James WHITNEY, b. 4 June 1856. Other children were Delmar L. WHITNEY, b. 1859; Benjamin WHITNEY, b. 1861; Ida M. WHITNEY, b. 1863, and Marquis D. WHITNEY, b. 1868. Daniel and Dilly Jane must have left New York state soon after their marriage as I picked up the whole family in the 1870 census for Anderson County, KS, and it showed Harvey b. IA, Delmar b. IL, Benjamin and Ida b. WI, and Marquis b. KS. This same census entry showed Daniel James to be 32 years old, with a notation behind his name "Insane." Another reference I have is that Daniel died somewhere in the East, and his widow and the first four children came to Kansas to live with her sister and Marquis was born here after her arrival. I don't know which story is the real fact, but thought that his wife Dilly Jane, my grandmother, might have shown him in the 1870 census because he may have still been living somewhere in a sanitarium. If that were the case, probably he either died or was institutionalized in Wisconsin, as that was where the last child was born before they came to Kansas. I have handled with the Wisconsin Vital Statistics but they advise their records back there are sparse and they didn't have anything. On the possibility that Daniel might have been in the Civil War and became insane there, I handled with the National Archives in Washington, and they send me a complete pension file on a Daniel J. Whitney who was born in New York in 1833, was in the War, but the wife and childrens names were all different, so the name was just a coincidence. I am seeking the names of his parents and his birth, marriage, and death dates and places.

He was supposedly a son of ----- and ----- (BENNET) WHITNEY, was a professor who went to MI to establish schools. The 1847 marriage was witnessed by an Israel WHITNEY, b. ca. 1819 in OH, who may be a brother. Who were his parents, and where was he born? They were in Iowa in 1870.

THOMAS, b. 1843 in Lorain Co. Ohio. Mary m. Lt. James Jefferson HOOKER in Ogle Co., IL, and lived and d. in MO. He survived Andersonville Prison, and came back to Caldwell Co., MO, where he, his wife, Mary, and his mother-in-law, Diadamia, are all buried.

WHITNEY, Ebenezer, m. 17 Jan 1769, Sheffield, NB, Huldah MOOERS, b. 24 Jun 1751, Rowley, MA, dau. of Peter and Mary (HOWES) MOOERS. It has been published that he was a son of Deacon Samuel and Lydia (SPOONER) WHITNEY from Maine, however nobody has been able to find documents to prove this. Ebenezer may have been a part of the migration from Massachusetts or Maine to Maugerville, N.B. in the early 1760's. Where and when was he born, and who were his parents?

WHITNEY, Enoch, about whom I know little, is where I seem to be stuck. He had a son George who was born (I believe) in Sisterville, WV, but then grew up in Monroe or Belmont Co., OH. George had several brothers. George married Julia Racheal GATCHELL, and had: Dorothy Florence (my grandmother), b. Barnesville, Belmont Co., OH, Juanita, Ida, Bessie, Naomi, and Mary. I am desperately searching for WHITNEYs from Monroe, Belmont, and Columbiana Counties, OH. If any of this information rings a bell, Please let me know. I am up against a brick wall and very frustrated.

WHITNEY, Ezra, "of Ontario Co.", d. 1848, MI, m. Fall of 1822, Livingston Co., NY, Julia PELTON, b. 10 Jan 1804, Lyme, NH, d. 1852, Kalamzoo, MI. They lived in Springwater, NY, where both parents of Julia, John and Martha (PELTON) PELTON (second cousins) died in 1845 and 1846. In 1847 the entire family moved to Jackson County, Michigan, where Ezra died in 1848. They then moved to Allegan County, and then to Kalamazoo, where Julia died in 1852. She, but not he, is found in the 1850 Census of Cascade, MI. They had 10 children, six of whom survived childhood:

WHITNEY, George, b. perhaps in Canada, say 1823. His family was listed in the 1860 census for Stephenson Co., IL. It listed his wife Marie (ROWE) WHITNEY, children, Martha, Henry, Susan and Crosby. Crosby and Henry show up in the 1870 census for Marshall Co., IA. Crosby then moved to Seward Co., NE until 1885 when he moved to Republic Co., KS, he stayed there until 1905 when he moved to Laton, CA until he died. His son Herman stayed in Republic Co., KS, then came his son Earl, his son Gerald and then me David WHITNEY. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

WHITNEY, Herbert Thomas, m. Sarah BERISFORD. They are my paternal great grandparents. Their son -- my grandfather -- James Cedric (or Cyril or Thomas, depending on whom I ask) WHITNEY was born in Macclesfield, Chester County in 1898. Herbert was a silk weaver. I believe they emigrated to the United States around 1906, settling in or around Patterson, New Jersey. I also believe my grandfather had a number of siblings, but he became estranged from them as a young man -- reasons unknown. I think that a number of them are in New England. I live in Watertown, MA, where there are many WHITNEYs -- have no idea if any are relations! Searching for any information on this family.

WHITNEY, James Clarence, b. about 1850, Gardner, ME, , was raised a WHITNEY. He was supposed to have been raised by a maiden aunt after his parents died together in some kind of accident. His real surname was supposed to be FERRIDA, not sure of spelling. Have ran into brick walls every where I go. He lived in Cambridge and Boston, MA, raised a family of 7 children and died in MA in the early 1900's. Any information would be appreciated.
ANSWER: Robert L. Ward supplied the following: James Clarence Ferriter, son of James and Nancy (Sweeney) Ferriter, was born 3 Jan 1850, Boston, MA. His mother died in 1853 of consumption. His father survived until 1902. He was adopted, probably by Esther B. and Eunice Whitney, single ladies, and appears with them and their mother, with surname Whitney, in the 1860 census in Gardiner, ME.

WHITNEY, Jeremiah, is found in Bedford Co., VA, land records 14 Feb 1761. Could he be another son of Samuel and Agnes (BYNUM) WHITNEY? Could he be a brother to Samuel and son of Joshua and Mary (-----) WHITNEY? Or is he of another branch all together?
WHITNEY, Joel, b. probably about 1740-1755 in or around Littleton, NH, was father of Joel, who was father of Abigail, who m. John MAYNARD. Joel was in the militia during the Revolutionary War, for at least a two week period. He marched with others to meet the British at Fort Ticonderoga, but when I don't know, but family tradition says that when they got there, the British were gone, so they marched home again. If there is any information out there on this man, I would appreciate a response.

WHITNEY, John, m. Lydia -----, and had daughter Mary b. 3 Sep 1735, and son John b. 24 Apr 1737, both at Lexington, MA. Who were his parents? What was her maiden name?
WHITNEY, John, and his sons Eliakim and Peter were from the USA, according to Ontario Archives land petition records, and were living in the Lunenberg District, (Matilda ?County), likely in Johnstown, prior to 1791. In 1791 when the Province of Upper Canada was formed, John and Eliakim petitioned for land. Johnstown, located about 2 miles east of present day Prescott, was formed in 1789/90. By 1793 there was a lumbermill established. It seems Prescott came into being with the construction of Fort Wellington in 1812. A petition from Peter in 1819 states that he had been living in the province (Upper Canada) for 28 years, ie., since 1791. Does anyone have further information as to when this family came to Canada and in particular where in the USA did they come from? I am aware of the Whitney Phoenix entry # 394 about a John WHITNEY, born 1748 a son of Eliakim, tradition had it that John had a wife and three sons and had settled in Prescott Upper Canada in 1800, where he was engaged in lumbering. It is reasonable that the research for the Phoenix record, done a few years prior to 1878, would indicate Prescott and not Johnstown, as by the late 1800's Johnstown was likely a minor suburb of Prescott. Any comments (I am really looking for evidence) on where the John WHITNEY and his famly living in Johnstown (Prescott) in 1791, came from and the likelihood that he was the John mentioned in the WHITNEY Phoenix entry #394 would be much appreciated.
WHITNEY, John, according to the 1850 St. Johns County Fla Census , said he was born in Maine and was 50 years old. He married Mahala CLARK at Harpswell, Cumberland, Maine in June, 1845 and arrived in Savannah, Ga, late November or early December 1845 while enroute to Florida. They first settled at Picolata (St. Johns County) and later moved south east near the coast to farm. Mahala's mother was Lucinda CLARK who married David ORR of Orr's Island in 1843. The had at least one son named Harmon. John's occupation in 1850 was carpenter and in 1860 he listed as a farmer. Seek ancestors, siblings, and first marriage of John WHITNEY. Any information or clues to his relatives will be deeply appreciated.

WHITNEY, Joseph, b. ca. 1856, MI, m. Florence ODGERS, probably in Wisconsin where my grandfather, Fred Reed WHITNEY, was born in Wrightsville. There was only one other child, Elizabeth ("Bessie"). The family was involved in logging and moved from Wisconsin to Priest River, Idaho, in about 1904, then to Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Canada in 1905. My 85-year-old father says that Joseph would never tell anyone much about his background. When asked, all he would say was, "I'm a blue-bellied Yankee." Does anyone know his birth date and place, and his parentage?

We believe she had a sister Ida STEVENS - but do not know whether STEVENS was her maiden or married name. Lanora was probably the daughter of Byron L. WHITNEY, b. 5 Jul 1848. She was my grandmother. He lived in Muhlenburg Co., KY, then Warrick Co., IN, then Pike Co., IN, and finally Iron Co., MO. Who were his parents? His mother's name was Sarah. This was found on a marriage permission in Butler Co., KY, for Lovet P. and for his brother Simon WHITNEY, to Patsy ARANDELL in 1825. Sarah later married a Joseph HARDGROVE. I have spouses (and some children) for all of Lovet's children with the exception of Elizabeth J. and Lydia Emaline. A friend found church records in Spurgeon, IN, which indicated Lydia ran off with a married man.

Children with Michael McKee, Sr., were Olive, and Seth Whitney. Lucinda Whitney was born in Connecticut in about 1796. She was the daughter of Jonathan and Olive (Cady)Whitney. Lucinda Whitney Gamble McKee died in Jefferson Co., MO February, 1846. We now have proof of her parentage verified by her fathers will. We know that Lucinda aka Lucina is the mother of the two McKee children but cannot verify if she is the mother of the Gamble children. It is is widely held in the Gamble family that Mary "Polly" Reid Gamble, first wife of John Gamble, Jr. is the mother of these children. I would appreciate any info.

WHITNEY, Nancy, married my 4th ggrandfather Elijah JACKSON July 30, 1828, in Burke County, NC. I believe that Nancy may have been the dau. of Ransom WHITNEY, however I have not been able to connect her yet. I have the copy of her marriage bond from Burke Co., NC. Elijah and Nancy had a son in Burke Co., in 1830, James Henry JACKSON who served in the CW. They also had a son in KY, John A. JACKSON, b. abt. 1842. This is all I have on them at this time. I lost them on census about the same time I lost Ransom in 1840.

WHITNEY, Omer Lloyd, b. 26 Jul 1902, d. 2 May 1952. He is buried in Miltonvale, KS. He married Ina KAISER. There were 11 children born. 6 daughters and 1 son are still living, I have been told. John Paul, b. 6 April 1937 and Norman Floyd, b. 8 June 1939, also died 2 May 1952, supposably in a plane crash, I have not been able to find anything on this though. WHITNEY, Rhoda, baptised April 30, 1769, S. Salem Presbyterian Church, Westchester Co., NY, dau. of John and Rebecca (MOREHOUSE) WHITNEY was married to Sylvanus KEELER or Nehemiah HUBBELL. Phoenix claims she was married to Sylvanus KEELER and the Hubbell Genealogy, Additions and Revisions (1995), claims she was married to Nehemiah HUBBELL. I can find no proof of either.
Nehemiah HUBBELL was baptised in the same church in 1760. He was living in Ft. Ann, Washington Co. , NY with wife and 2 sons under 16 and two dau. under 16 in the 1790 census. One son John named a child Whitney, b. 1820 and he had a son Ezra Whitney HUBBELL, b. 1841. I am a descendent of Nehemiah HUBBELL and would like proof one way or another who married Rhoda WHITNEY.
I tried to get a will for her father John WHITNEY who died in Henderson, NY in 1831 at age 85. The wills began in 1833 according to the will indexes at the Watertown Public Library and he died in 1831. I also wrote the DAR and no help there either.

WHITNEY, William, of London, England came over as a British soldier (Rev. War) to Canada. He would have been born around 1760, lived to be 110 years old and had a daughter, Mary Anne. They settled at the mouth of the Humber River on Mimico Point outside of Toronto. His daughter married my ggrandfather Henry Jackson who took discharge in Canada and ran the Olde Peacock Inne on Dundas Street in Toronto. Any connection most welcome.

WHITNEY, Irem, m. Marilla S. -----, and had daughter Melendy WHITNEY, who married 3 Oct 1857, Two Rivers, Manitowoc Co., WI, Thomas G. FENTON. They are on the 1860 census with a son Irem born about 1858, in Brillion, Calumet Co., WI. Melendy died 14 Nov. 1870, where I don't know. After she died Thomas remarried a Mary Ann DOBSON. I found this out from Thomas's Civil War records when his second wife applied for pension, 4 July 1893, after Thomas died in Portland, OR, 21 May 1886. This is all I know of her. I know my FENTON lived in St. Lawrence Co., NY, before coming to WI. They lived in the town of Canton in the 1840's. Did Thomas and her go back out there? Did she die there? Her mother says she was with her daughter at the time of death. What ever happened to their son? I have not found him any more than on the one census.

Bernice was born in Buffalo, NY Aug 18, 1866 and died in Castle Rock, Cowlitz Co, WA on Jan 13, 1936. Bernice was married to Lillian Matilda CRANDALL who was born about 1865 in Cherry Creek, NY and died Sept 11, 1914 in Castle Rock, WA. Bernice also had a sister and a brother listed as living in his obituary. His sister was May WHITNEY SNOW and his brother, C. M. WHITNEY of Port Angeles, WA. A cousin said he went by the name of "Mentle". I do not know if there were other siblings.
Ken Whitney supplied the following: John A. WHITNEY was a Civil War verteran. His pension application and that of his widow reveal that he was born 3 Feb 1840 in Howard, Steuben Co., NY, and married firstly in Nov 1861 Emeline "PAGE".
The 1850 Census of Independence, Allegany Co., NY, shows John WHITNEY, age 8, in the family of his apparent parents, William WHITNEY, age 38, b. NY, and Clarinda, age 36, b. NY, along with several siblings. Ken Whitney reports her maiden name as Clarinda DOLLY, but the LDS Ancestral File calls her Clarinda DAWLEY, daughter of Christopher and Lavina (-----) DAWLEY.
WHITNEY, Margaret, probably b. ca. 1800, m. ca. 1825, Ebenezer BEAL of Bowdoinham, ME. He had married firstly, Mary BAKER. Since Ebenezer didn't seem to travel much, she should have been from the Bowdoinham/Bath area. My hypothesis is that Ebenezer and Margaret had children, including one Martin E. BEAL, my gggfather. My problem is that from the available census records, there is nothing connecting the two families. Another BEAL researcher is descended from Ebenezer's first wife, Mary BAKER. They believe also that Ebenezer married Margaret, but they do not know about children of that marriage. I hope to find eventually either a will or land record connecting either Ebenezer or Margaret to Martin E.
There are several WHITNEY families in the Lincoln and Penobscot county censuses in this period. If you don't know Margaret, I would appreciate it if anyone can say that Margaret was not part of any of those families, and why. I have searched all the WHITNEY data bases and found a few unexplained female children that I cannot eliminate. If anyone has information about the following families please contact me:

She was born 5 Nov 1868, Athens, Somerset Co., ME, and died 30 Sep 1954, Springfield, MA.
Again according to the LDS International Genealogical Index, Josiah Francis WHITNEY married Mary MOORE on 14 May 1850, in Long Pond, Somerset Co., ME. According to the LDS Pedigree Resource File, she was daughter of John B. and Sally (HOLDEN) MOORE, and he was son of Cyrus WHITNEY. Augusta vital records give Josiah F. WHITNEY's birth date as 23 Mar 1825, but no names of parents, and this was probably recorded when he was an adult, along with the births of his children. His family appears in the 1880 Census of Solon, Somerset Co., ME, and his age is given as 55, born in ME, parents born in ME.
This Cyrus WHITNEY seems certain to be Cyrus6 WHITNEY [Henry5, Isaac4, Nathaniel3, Benjamin2, John1], whose wife was Sophia STEARNS.

I show their 10 children as James, Sarah Ann, Charlotte Jane, William Parker, Edmund, Samuel, Lucinda, George H., Henry B., and Emma. Moses was b. in Whitney, NB March 4, 1810 to Samuel WHITNEY and Sarah YOUNG. Samuel was b. in Sheffield, NB September 18, 1784 to Ebenezer WHITNEY and Huldah MOOERS. Ebenezer was a pioneer settler of the Mirimichi River region of NB. We don't know where he came from - most indicators point to New England.
WHITNEY, Moses, may have been father of three WHITNEY brothers who married three DOW sisters near Houlton, ME, between 1865 and 1867. Two of the sons were John and Daniel. All three couples made it to Wisconsin where John and his brother settled. Daniel moved on to Missouri. John's son Henry would have been my grandfather. I am seeking to flush out this information and to link to earlier ancestors in Maine. Any help would be appreciated.

May 1964. World Family Tree Volume 3, Tree #2472, listed Orson WHITNEY's father as Aaron Parker WHITNEY, b. Oct. 2, 1815, Pepperell, MA, and his mother as Phyrilla DURKEE, b. Mar. 3, 1820. I would appreciate any information on the above.
ANSWER: Fred F. Whitney, Whitney Genealogy: The Descendants of John Whitney who came from Whitney-on-the-Wye, England, to Pepperell, Mass., to Tunbridge, Vermont. Twelve Generations, 1553-1977 (Rutland, VT: The author, 1977), page 15, shows:

Feb. 22, 1843, d. Jan. 14, 1875; m. (2nd) Feb. 1, 1876 at So. Royalton, Laura F. Jones, b. May 13, 1851, d. Sept. 11, 1929. Child:
i. Warren S.9, b. Feb. 19, 1877; d. Sept. 19, 1906.
Thus that Orson WHITNEY is a different person, and is eliminated.
Orson and Elsie WHITNEY appear in the 1880 Census, Greenfield Twp., Erie Co., PA. He is age 34, she 29, both born in PA, no parent birthplaces listed. With them is son Walter, age 9, born in PA, parents born in PA. It seems possible that he was the same Orson WHITNEY, born 1846, son of Amasa and Isabella (COURTRIGHT) WHITNEY, born in Bingham Twp., Potter Co., PA, and possibly grandson of Ephraim WHITNEY of Sherburne, Chenango Co., NY.
WHITNEY, Peter5, b. 21 April 1738, Willington, CT, m. 21 Apr 1763, Marcy CASE (b. 15 Aug 1745, Tolland, CT), had a descendant, probably a great-granddaughter, ----- WHITNEY, who was b. 15 Jan 1874 [sic: probably should be 1814 --RLW], and m. Calvin EATON (b. 1809 in Hanover, N.H.). They had a son Horace EATON, b. 1832. in Royalton, VT, d. 1913, m. 1859, Rebecca Phillips BAXTER. Can anyone supply the intervening generations?
ANSWER: Frederick Clifton Pierce, Descendants of John Whitney, p. 206, supplied the intervening generations: Peter6, and Amanda Melvina7, who m. Calvin EATON. Horace was apparently a brother of Amanda Melvina, whose name was changed to EATON at some point.
WHITNEY, Peter, was an officer in the Pioneer Town Site Company, Dawes Co., NE, about 1887. Can anyone say where and when he was born and who his parents were?
ANSWER: Mary Hoeve supplied the following: I have quite a bit of information on him and his brother, Throop. Peter WHITNEY was b. in Ft. Ann, NY, 1832; d. in Omaha, NE; bur. in East Troy, WI. His wife and three of his children who died in infancy also bur. there. Survived by a son and daughter. I have a picture of him circa 1893. His parents were Peter Whitney and second wife, Mary. Peter, Sr., d. 1837, Ft. Ann; bur. in Ft. Ann next to first wife, Betsy. Mary (aka Polly) bur. in East Troy. I have no information on their parents. Your Peter was a land agent for the Chicago Northwestern RR and the town of Whitney, NE is named after him.
WHITNEY, Robert Lawrence, born May 30, 1947, in Georgia we think, is my husband's father. He served in the Navy for a time. He had one family prior to my husband, with two children named Robin (F) and Robert (M). He never married my husband's mom. My husband hasn't seen his dad since he was around 14 y/o. My husbands name is Tracey WHITNEY, b. April 30, 1967. We are also looking for any information on this family line since we know so little about it.

Sarah A. WHITNEY married to Thomas A. FENTON on 28 Jan 1848 in Mukwonago, Waukesha Co., WI. She was born 17 Sept. 1828 in Madrid, St. Lawrence Co., NY, she died 28 Feb. 1892 in Lanark, Portage Co., WI. I don't know her parents. Sarah and Thomas had children Emma, Charles, and Andrew FENTON.

WHITNEY, Willard, born circa 1836, married Clara -----, b. ca. 1839, lived in Corinth, Penobscot Co., ME, in 1870, where they are found in the census with children Ella, b. ca. 1865, and Leland W., b. ca. 1869. Who were his parents, and who was Clara?
ANSWER: Willard H. WHITNEY and Clara LAWRENCE were married 24 May 1863, Corinna, Penobscot Co., ME, according to the vital records of that town. They appear in the 1880 Census of Kenduskeag, Penobscot Co., ME. Willard H. WHITNEY was aged 43, born in ME, parents both born in ME; Clara WHITNEY was aged 42, born in ME, parents both born in ME; and three children Ellerett (15), Leland W. (11), and Sarah (1).
According to the LDS International Genealogical Index, Willard H.8 WHITNEY was born 14 Jun 1835, East Corinth, Penobscot Co., ME, son of Sewell and Lucy (CRAIG) WHITNEY [Jonathan, (?)Jonathan5, Samuel4, John3, Benjamin2, John1], and died 1 Dec 1905.
WHITNEY, William K. or T., b. 25 May 1850, m. Ella J. WHITNEY, b. 18 Oct 1851, d. 3 Jun 1923. They had 5 children, namely: Maude, Clayton George, Mary, Earnest, and Mildred. Anybody got a clue about where this guy William comes from? My cousin says he is no relation, but I don't know if I buy that!

The LDS International Genealogical Index says her maiden name was WHITING, not WHITNEY. His father Calvin WHITNEY is son of John R. and Catherine (SCHOONOVER) WHITNEY. That makes his ancestry William K.9 WHITNEY [Calvin8, John R.7, William6, Thomas5, William4, William3, Joshua2, John1].
