Family:Whitney, Eliab Turner (1789-1865)

Eliab Turner⁶ Whitney (Josiah⁵, John⁴, Nathaniel³, Benjamin², John¹), son of Josiah⁵ and Hannah (Turner) Whitney, was born 17 Dec 1789, Gaspé, Lower Canada, and died 2 Apr 1866, Edgecomb, ME. He was buried in the cemetery opposite the Baptist Church, Edgecomb, ME, next to his son Benjamin.

He married firstly, before 1812, Lydia Butterworth, daughter of William Butterworth. She died 1827.

He married secondly, 1827, Cape Breton, NS, Lydia M. Williams. She was born 10 Sep 1810, Salem, MA, the dau. of William and Lydia (Butterworth) Williams, both born, England. She died 12 March 1893, Bath, ME.^[1] She was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Bath, ME.

She was baptized as an adult, 5 Feb 1843, Bristol, ME.^[2]

He was a cooper. He resided in Ship Harbor (now Port Hawkesbury), NS, Newcastle and Edgecomb, ME.

i.	Lydia7 Whitney, b. 1818, Cape Breton Island, NS; d. 7 Oct 1912, Edgecomb, ME; m. (int. 6 Nov 1840, Edgecomb, ME) Robert S. Brier, son of Robert and Mary (Haggett) Brier, b. ca. 1812, Boothbay, ME, d. 30 Mar 1892, Edgecomb, ME. They resided in Edgecomb, ME in the 1870 census. They had four known children: a. Martha A. Brier, b. -----. b. John Brier, b. -----. c. Edwin Brier, b. -----. d. Robert S. Brier, b. -----.
ii.	Sarah Whitney, b. 2 Jan 1819, Hawksbury, Cape Breton, NS. Probably d. before 1830 when her half-sister, Sarah Jane, was born.
iii.	Eliab Whitney, b. ca. 1824; d. 18 Jun 1846 at sea. Buried or memorialized in the Oak Grove Grove Cemetery, Bath, ME.
iv.	Betsey Whitney, b. 1827; m. 23 Jul 1851, Charles H. Harding. She is found in the 1860 Census of Boothbay, ME, living with the family of her half-sister Nancy (Whitney) Morrison. Nothing more is now known.

v.	Nancy Ann7 Whitney, b. 30 May 1828, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, CAN and d. 31 Aug 1895, Auburn, ME; m. Mar 1859, Ira I. Morrison. He was b. 30 May 1833, Boothbay, ME, the son of Jonathan and Emma Morrison. He died 25 Mar 1895, Auburn, ME. Both are buried in the Evergreen Cemetery, Auburn, ME. They resided Auburn, ME, where Ira was a shoe maker.
vi.	Sarah Jane Whitney, b. 21 Dec 1830, Newcastle, ME;[3] d. 10 Jan 1908, Sherman, Aroostook Co., ME; m. 18 Jul 1856 or 8 Jul 1854, Edgecomb, ME, David Alonzo Merry, son of Hiram and Elizabeth (Trask) Merry of Edgecomb, b. 10 Feb 1830, Edgecomb, ME; d. 1 Apr 1859 aboard the schooner "Grace T. Powers" sailing out of Gloucester, MA; resided Damariscotta, ME. She m.(2) 3 Feb 1867, Damariscotta, ME, William B. Seavey, b. 1 June 1816, Wiscasset, ME, son of James and Sarah (Clough) Seavey. William died 2 Nov 1898, Damariscotta, ME and Sarah Jane died 10 Jan 1908, Sherman, ME. She was buried, Damariscotta, ME. Child: a. Brainerd Merry, b. ca. 1855, ME.[4]

Emeline Whitney, b. 9 Mar 1833, Newcastle, ME; m. 9 Nov 1851, Gloucester, MA, Jonathan Chandler Merry, b. 13 June 1826, Belfast, ME, son of Hiram and Elizabeth (Trask) Merry;[5] resided Sherman Mills, ME. Jonathan died 27 Nov 1894, Sherman, ME, and Emeline died 25 Oct 1914, Sherman Mills, ME. They had no children.[6] They were foster parents of their double nephew Brainerd Merry, above, and also: a. Alden Merry, b. ca. 1854, ME.
viii.	Williams Whitney, b. 30 Aug 1835, Newcastle, ME; m. Rosalina H. Merry.
ix.	David J. Whitney, b. 23 Nov 1838, Newcastle, ME; d. 3 Jan 1917, Westport, ME, and is buried Oak Grove Cemetery, Bath, ME; unmarried; resided Bath and Westport, ME. He was a sailor.
x.	Alvin Whitney (Pierce calls him Albion), b. 16 Feb 1840, Newcastle, ME; m. 1863; resided Gloucester, MA; a son was Benjamin L.
xi.	Alpheus Whitney, b. 16 Feb 1840, Newcastle, ME; m. (1) Mehitable "Hattie" C. Tibbetts; (2) Georgia F. Hilton.
xii.	Benjamin F. Whitney, b. 12 May 1842; d. 4 Dec 1864, Annapolis, MD, in hospital, a casualty of the Civil War. His mother received a pension from the U.S. Government. He is buried next to his father, Old Cemetery, Edgecomb, ME, across from the old baptist church.
xiii.	Hannah Augusta Whitney, b. 13 May 1845, Newcastle, ME; d. 21 Sep 1925, Vineland, NJ, where she is buried; m. 19 or 18 Feb 1863, Bath, ME, Joseph Manual Soiett,[7] b. 25 Jun 1838, Bath, ME; resided Sherman, ME, 1868. She had nine children.
xiv.	Alonzo L. Whitney, b. 9 Aug 1847, Newcastle, ME; m. (1) Alice R. Parsons; (2) Ada W. Hale.
xv.	Georgiana Whitney, b. 1 Jan 1850, prob. Newcastle, ME; m. 6 Oct 1876, Bath, ME, John F. Young; resided Bath, ME, in the censuses of 1880 and 1900. He was a caulker. Georgiana died 1928, and John 1940. They are buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Bath, ME. Children: a. Florence B. Young, b. Apr 1878. b. George F. Young, b. Oct 1880.
