Family:Whitney, Benjamin (1799-1871)

Benjamin⁷ Whitney (Aaron⁶, Daniel⁵, Daniel⁴, Henry³, John², Henry¹), son of Aaron⁶ and Judith (Barlow) Whitney, was born 24 Jan 1799, Newtown (now Elmira), NY, and died 17 Jul 1871, Big Flats, NY.

He married, 8 Oct 1817, Big Flats, NY, Mary Stark, daughter of Amos and Elizabeth (Vantassel) Stark. She was born 7 Dec 1795, Dolsantown, Minnisink, NY, and died after 1873.

Phoenix says the following:

Benjamin Whitney, b. at Newtown, now Elmira, N.Y., 24 Jan. 1799; a farmer, saw-mill owner, lumberman, and justice of the peace; moved with his father, in 1800, to that part of the old town of Newtown, which is now Big Flats, N.Y., and was there married, 8 Oct. 1817, by Rev. Roswell Goff, Baptist, to Mary Stark, who was born at Dolsantown, in Minnisink, N.Y., 7 Dec. 1795, dau. of Amos and Elizabeth (Vantassel) Stark. He passed his life at Big Flats, on the Sing Sing Creek; and died there suddenly, 17 July 1871, and was buried in their family cemetery on his own farm. An obituary notice of him appeared in the Elmira Weekly Advertiser, of 22 July 1871.

iv.	Daniel Whitney, b. 26 Aug 1829, Big Flats, NY; died 29 Oct 1855, in his father's house at Big Flats, from a disease of the heart, unmarried; and was buried in the family cemetery.
v.	(daughter) Whitney, b. say 1832; existence inferred from 1840 census.
