Family:Whitney, Nathan (1707-1804)
Nathan4 Whitney (Nathaniel3, Benjamin2, John1), son of Nathaniel3 and Sarah (Ford) Whitney, was born 10 Jan 1706/7, York or Gorham, ME,[1] and died 1804, Gorham, ME, aged 95.[2]
Marriage intentions were published 29 Aug 1730, York, ME, for him "of Biddeford" and Lydia Young "of York". He "of Biddeford" married firstly, 12 Nov 1730, York, ME, Lydia Young "of York",[3] daughter of Matthias and Eleanor (Haynes) Young. She was born 15 Oct 1711, York, ME. She died before Oct 1748 at prob. Biddeford, ME, based on Nathan's second marriage 20 Oct 1748, Biddeford, ME.
Marriage intentions were published 6 Oct 1748, Biddeford, ME, for him and his second wife Elizabeth Melcher "both of Biddeford".[4] He married secondly, 20 Oct 1748, Biddeford, ME, Elizabeth (Bailey) Melcher "both of Biddeford".[5] She was born circa 1707, Portsmouth, NH. She married firstly, 25 Dec 1723, Portsmouth, NH, Edward Melcher.
He was also known as Elder Nathan Whitney. History and much information comes from "The History of Gorham, Maine", by Hugh D. McLellan, 1903. Not in the Whitney extracts from the Gorham, ME, VR's for either birth or marriage. A Nathan Whitney is shown in those VR's as dying in 1804 at age 95, which could be this man if the memory of age/birthdate was off by only one year. He was in Gorham, Cumberland County, ME, by 1763. Since his father's family was of York, and his younger siblings were all born in York, despite the source above, I will choose to identify his birth with York. GDMNH shows him as the Nathan Whitney who bought property in 1730 in Saco from William Presbury (and supposedly his brother, Stephen Presbury). This may account for him being listed as "of Biddeford" in his marriage record in the York VR's, as Biddeford is right next to Saco. He was son of Nathaniel, was one of the early settlers in Gorham. He came to this town from Biddeford, where his children were born. In 1752 he purchased of Enoch Freeman of Falmouth the thirty acre lot, 26, with the dwelling house and barn thereon. He was a prominent and influential citizen of Gorham, and served on many important town committees. He was also active in religious matters. We find him recorded as an early elder in the church. He married Lydia, daughter of Matthias Young of York, Me. Children: David, b. Apr. 8, 1732, m. Hannah Brown, Feb. 1, 1754, 2nd, Abigail Knight, 3d, Rebecca Edgecomb; Abel, b. Aug. 20, 1734, m.
