Nathan8 Whitney (Smyrna7, Samuel6, Samuel5, William4, Nathaniel3, John2, John1), son of Smyrna7 and Ruth (Whitney) Whitney, was born, 20 Jul 1828, Westminster, MA,[1] and died 28 Jan 1912.

He married firstly, 27 Nov 1850, Fitchburg, MA, Mary Sophronia Tolman,[2] daughter of Calvin and Mary Whitney (Bowers) Tolman. She was born 22 Jun 1832, Troy, NH, and died 23 Mar 1861, Fitchburg, MA, aged 28 years 9 months 1 day, of pneumonia.[3]

He married secondly, 30 Nov 1864, Pepperell, MA, Charlotte Mariah Belcher, daughter of Samuel and Anna Gray (Caldwell) Belcher. She was born 1 Mar 1830, Stockbridge, VT, and died 10 Sep 1917, Bennington, NH.

Nathan Whitney was born in Westminster, MA, at the old homestead, July 20, 1828; attended the public schools in town, and finished his education at the academy in Westminster. Lived at home till 1853, when he went to Middleton, MA, to work in a paper mill for his brother Samuel; worked for him there most of the time till 1861, when he went to Fitchburg, MA, to continue with him in the paper business. In 1863 he went to Claremont, NH, to continue the same business with him. In the fall of 1866 he removed to Bennington, NH, where he ran a paper mill in connection with him till his death, in 1868, when the mill passed into the hands of Mr. Lyman Patch, of Fitchburg, MA. He leased an individual half of it from him and continued to run it till 1872, when he quit the paper business. The same year, in connection with his youngest brother, George, and others, went into sash, blind and started a mill in Bennington, NH, for the manufacturing of ground wood pulp, and ran that business in Bennington and Stoddard, NH, five or six years. In 1858 he bought one section of Iowa land from the U.S. government, and has added till he now has 880 acres, which eleven years ago he began to improve, and has spent a share of his time there since; resided Bennington, NH, and Irwin, Shelby County, IA.

iii. William Belcher Whitney, b. 10 Jan 1866; resided New York City, care Betts, Atterbury, Hyde & Betts, 120 Broadway. He was born in Claremont, NH, moved to Bennington, NH, in 1867. Attended the public schools; fitted for college at Francestown academy, 1880-83; entered Amherst college, Amherst, MA, 1883, and graduated in 1887; took the three years' course at the Harvard law school, graduating with the class of 1890. Went to New York City in the fall of 1890; was admitted to the New York bar in the spring of 1892, and to practice in the United States courts in 1893. Engaged in the practice of patent law. Member of the Harvard Club of New York City, and the Association of the Bar of the city of New York. Degrees, A.B. cum laude, Amherst college, '87; A.M. and LL.B. cum laude, Harvard University, 1890.
iv. Edward Samuel Whitney, b. 12 Oct 1867, Bennington, NH;[8] at Harvard law school, Cambridge, MA, in 1893. He fitted for college; one year at Francestown academy, Francestown, NH; two years at Arms academy, Shelburne Falls, MA, where he graduated in 1885, and entered Amherst college that fall; he was out one year on account of sickness, and graduated A.B. in 1890; entered the Harvard law school Oct 1890; is a member of the third year class, and expects to receive an LL.B. and an A.M. from the university in June; was admitted to the Suffolk bar Feb 1893, and expects to practice in Chicago. Notes

Mary Whitney (Bowers) Tolman was daughter of Joshua and Sarah7 (Whitney) Bowers, and granddaughter of both Joshua and Mary6 (Whitney) Bowers and John6 and Mary (Farnsworth) Whitney. She has three descents from John1 Whitney.
