Family:Whitney, Mary (1761-1835)

Mary⁶ Whitney (Joshua⁵, Daniel⁴, Benjamin³, John², John¹), daughter of Capt. Joshua⁵ and Mary (Clarke) Whitney, was born 19 Jun 1761, Worcester, MA, and died 27 Apr 1835, Gilsum, Cheshire, New Hampshire, United States. She is buried in Hillcrest Cemetery, Lawrenceville, St. Lawrence, NY.^[1]

She married, 24 Jun 1778, Worcester, MA, Samuel Whitney,^[2] son of Hon. Joseph⁵ and Mary (Hastings) Whitney. They were third cousins by common descent from John² and Ruth (Reynolds) Whitney. He was born 7 Aug 1758, Newton, MA, and died 1 Jun 1831. He is buried in Hillcrest Cemetery, Lawrenceville, St. Lawrence, NY.^[3]

v.	Lois Whitney, b. 23 Aug 1788, Gilsum, NH;[7] m. James M. Marks; resided Keene, NH.
vi.	Luther Whitney, b. 15 Apr 1791, Gilsum, NH;[8] m. Betsey Dart.
vii.	Lydia Whitney, b. 6 Sep 1793, Gilsum, NH;[9] d. 25 Jan 1887; m. 18 May 1813, Surry, NH, James Locke;[10] resided Wellsboro, PA. He was b. 18 May 1790; d. 14 Mar 1874. He was a watchmaker and jeweler; resided Wellsboro, PA.
viii.	Daniel Whitney, b. 3 Sep 1795, Gilsum, NH;{{ref|12}; m. Emeline Henshaw.
ix.	William Clarke Whitney, b. 29 Aug 1797, Gilsum, NH;[11] d. unmarried in Belleville, ON.
x.	Lucy Whitney, b. 27 Apr 1800, Gilsum, NH;[12] m.(1) 20 Mar 1820, Gilsum, NH, Isaac Coburn;[13] m.(2) 27 May 1824, Gilsum, NH, Rev. John Smith,[14] an M.E. clergyman; resided Parishville, NY.

• 1800, Gilsum, Cheshire Co., NH: Sam^l Whitney, 1 male 26-44, 2 males 16-25, 3 males 0-9, 1 female 26-44, 2 females 10-15, and 2 females 0-9.
• 1810, Gilsum, Cheshire Co., NH: Whitney, Samuel, 1 male over 45, 1 male 10-15, 2 males 0-9, 1 female over 45, 2 females 16-25, and 1 female 10-15.
• 1820, Gilsum, Cheshire Co., NH: Whitney, Lemuel, 1 male over 45, 1 male 16-25, 1 male 0-9, 1 female over 45, and 1 female 16-25; 2 engaged in agriculture. Even though the record is clearly "Lemuel", this must be an error for Samuel, who lived in Gilsum at this time, but cannot be found otherwise in the census. Furthermore, there is no known Lemuel Whitney who could have been living there at that time.
